MO beagler, Have you had a chance to get the pups into the field. I was wondering if they got a good start.

Fella's I have a running pen and I can honestly say I have never sent a dog home covered in ticks like that maybe one or two from running the night before but nothing like that now most go home a couple pounds lighter depending on the food the owner sends and how much he wants his dog fed but even then if the dog is starting to look rough I take the 2 minutes to call the owner give him and update and ask if it would be alright to bump up the food. There is no excuse for mistreating a dog like that the bottom line is someone is paying you and trusting you with there hound you should always do your best to take as good of care of it as possible.

We had a safety meeting the other morning at work, I dropped a couple of hound off in the pen before I went, and picked them up after, man were they covered with ticks. I took them home and dunked them in the bucket of paramite dip,... my carelessness.

When we're running pups, I usually leave a bucket of dip at the pen for anyone to use. It's usually good for the week. This is what they need to do also. Pups that are continually in the brush need a cattle tag or dipped every week. imho
The ticks are really bad.

I would recommend you get some cattle tags for your hounds, it's easy to do and you take responsibility for your own.
I think we all learn from our mistakes and are often reminded when we slip-up.
Best of luck with your pups... ;)

Oh ya, one of the dogs is flat out running although he doesn't like to pack up and hunts more for the jump rather than the run right now... The other dog was worked with as well.. I am afraid its going to a be cull but i knew that before dropping it off. At least it hunts somewhat now and isnt people shy like it was. They did what they said they were gonna do and they had the puppy fat knocked of em..

My only issue is that they had enough ticks to be infected and have skin missing. Working dogs are exused to a degree but on the neck and top of ears if there is a scar its not because he was running a rabbit..

I have 3 other dogs ran three times a week and I haven't had ONE SINGLE tick using termidor and methoprene combined with flea and tick shampoo once a month. I aint mad cause there was ten or 20 ticks on em I am mad cause there was 300 or more that were obviously there for weeks on end...

MJD-- the dogs were already vaccinated SEVERAL times before that... Also the kennel cough was the second round because it takes two to be effective so they were infact protected. at least thats what my vet always said.. The first time I used the nose one and the second was a shot. They didnt have worms either but I dose them and bathe them the day before drop off.. ALWAYS.. Its just normally I wait 24 hours and put the meds on the morning of the drop off. this time I had to get them up there and it was a now or never type deal...

As a rule I drop my dogs off to a pen in 100% condition with nothing wrong with them.. I would hate to be responsible for bringing something into someone elses kennel....

I have been to 4 different starting pens and had I think 8 dogs trained and I have never once had a problem..

sounds like they did their job, started pups
as for the flea and tick problem, chalk it up as lesson learned ,been there done that from a boarding kennel yrs ago, they wanted to do the flea treatment there ,it was their way of not having any so called problems in their kennels, never had a dog infested so bad in all my life,my own fault for not treating them myself b4 i dropped them off

No way I am contacting authorities in a situation like that. I would not even ask for my money back. It would be a lesson learned and not repeated.

having dogs started is a pretty common practice... i dont have 5k to drop on a starting pen and to find rabbits for my dogs is a challenge. a starting pen is a perfect way to ensure the pups get the attention they deserve. it should be a safe place where they can learn the ropes and get ready to be turned out with a pack.. i have my adult hounds to keep conditioned.. i can change the breaks in my car in about 4 hours if i tried but my buddy does em in 10 mintues. i could start my dog but why when someone else offers the service cheap enough.. i love runnin dogs and buyin pups to train mannars and stuff but i dont really like starting them ... so i dont. its too innexpensive to get them good training elsewhere...

yall must have some good running spots.
it sucks to go out for hours and sometimes cant even beg up a rabbit.
and if you do it may be the only one for that day.
thats not good for a pup.
a starting pen is a very useful tool in my eyes.

I have started my own in the past- & I love it- I love working with pups. But MOBeag & Owl Creek are right. It can be tough at times. I'm startin 2 litermate pups now, & I'm takin 'em to a pen today.
He can put more rabbits in front of them than I ever could!
That's one thing I'm not sure I would do again- start 2 pups at one time. It's mainly the time factor,
