advice needed

Post by overcomer »

I have an above ground kennel with a doghouse on the back end of it. I have filled the doghouse with cedar chips. The problem is that I have a 6 month old pup who keeps using the bathroom in the cedar chips instead of outside the doghouse. Any advice on how to break this? Or will he grow out of it?

Thanks,
Greg

I've had to do this with a couple of pups. Make it just big enough for them to lay down and slowly make it bigger they grow.

Feed him in the dog box and he will go out to use the bathroom. It works once they are weaned most of the time they will not use it were they eat. Also I would stay away from the Ceadar chips if I could. They can cause problem for sure. Go with straw it also holds more heat in the winter. A lot of people don't like to use straw during the summer if the dogs are on the ground because of fleas but if they are off the ground it's really not a problem.

I had problems in the past when th pups would use the bathroom in cedar. When it gets wet it does something to there skin. Makes them Itch and can cuase some real problems. Maybe it's just bad luck but I've had a lot of old timers tell me to stay away from it. Since I quit using it I havent had any problems at all. The trick about feeding in the dog house was told to me by Lynn Perkins and it was very good advice cuase it really works. Keith you might start a post and see what other people think of cedar. Cedar, on it's own is not really bad for your dogs, but once it becomes wet (with urine) it releases it's volitile oils (what gives it the smell) and can cause contact burns (on the skin) or repiratory problems. I would advise if you like using wood chips, to use pine or aspen. Aspen is a bit on the pricey side, but is very well recieved by the dogs with very little sensitivity effects. I have never seen any problems with the pine.

i would say go back to the straw i have always used it and all you do is clean it out when it becomes dusty and add more and it keeps heat in along with it's 3.50 a bail and it goes along way. when i but new in my house the dogs are like a kid in a candy store the love it, it's like they get all excited and start running and rolloing in there new bed to get it comfirtiable to them.

As for the using it to take a dump in Lynn is right, i always especially younger hounds put a bowl of food in there with them, and they wont go in there anymore, they wil go outside.later you can move the feeder or pan outside.

Stick with the straw it's been used for many years and it's cheap, along with working great with easy clean up.

I totally agree w/ Keith. I had apup that would crap in her house all the time I tried cedar, pine, hay, and none of which would work. I put a conrete block in her coop to give her just enough room to sleep, and it worked immeaditly. Good luck :)

being we are on the subject of pooh.here is 1 for ya.
I have 2 different dog in 2 different pens and both pooh right in the door, and i got 2 males in 1 pen and 1 of the males takes a wizz in the others auto feeder. Now why is that? now i can understand the male thing alittle but the dogs doing it right in the entrance of doors is something else. i even tried moving them to different pens and they do it in them the same way.
You think there tring to tell me something ? and how do you make them quit going there? You can't block the door way? :!: :?:
