Diamond vs. Black Gold

Post by vince z »

I have been feeding Black Gold 26/18 bag for a few years now. I have been very pleased with it. However it has been getting harder to get and the price keeps going up. I have easy access to the Diamond feed. I would go with the Hi Energy formula 24/20. It is a couple dollars cheaper than the black gold for a 50 lb. bag, and I dont have to drive halfway across state to get it. I read the ingredients for the Diamond and everything looks good. I would like to hear from some people who have used it to get opinions. I run hard this time of year and dont want to jeopardize my dogs welfare at any price or inconvenience to me. So some feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Vince Z.

Pride's Chicken & Rice Pro Series 26/20 and 21/17 are great feeds, have you checked into them?

I have fed Diamond maroon bag for years. I've recently switched over to Black Gold black bag & it is by far the better food IMO. I feed less of it & there is less stool to pick up. Plus, the dogs' coats are glossier & their fur is softer.

I use Diamond, but am switching to Black Gold. I think it is a superior feed. Have heard nothing bad at all about Black Gold. Does it come in different protein levels?

I haven't tried Black Gold, but heard good things about it. I have feed various types of Diamond.
I used to feed Diamond 24/20 (maroon bag) in the winter, and really liked its results. However, since trying Diamond 26/18 (green bag) for winter time, I won't buy anything else. This is the 2nd winter in a row, and the dogs eat less, crap less, and have a ton of all day energy. I told some friends about my results with 26/18, and they switched from 24/20 to it, and agreed with me in saying it was by far the superior feed. It costs a little more, but I think the results are worth the money.

In the warmer weather, I feed Diamond 21/12 (yellow bag), and the dogs have more energy than any other low protein/low fat feed that I have ever tried.

Just my opinion, and hope it helps. :D

I havent fed Black Gold, because no one in my area really carries it, down here Diamond is sold locally at all the feed stores. I fed Diamond for about 5 years, but in the last year the dogs didnt look as good and it literally ran right through them. I switched over to Purina Hi-Pro and Pro Plan and the dogs look great and have that edge like I was used to seeing out in the field. Sure it may be a little more expensive but in the long run, I like the results I am having with it. Just my opinion. :D

I have completely gotten away from all the "sport" foods. I am currently feeding a mix of high quality kibble and lots of real meat (deer, beef, chicken, etc). I slightly cook the meat and add it to the kibble. The kibble I am using at this time is called Innova
Turkey
Chicken
Chicken Meal
Ground Barley
Ground Brown Rice
Potatoes
Natural Flavors
Ground White Rice
Chicken Fat
Herring
Apples
Carrots
Cottage Cheese
Sunflower Oil
Alfalfa Sprouts
Egg
Garlic
Taurine
Vitamins/Minerals
Viable Naturally Occurring Microorganisms

Moisture 10.0 %
Protein 24.0 %
Fat 14.0 %
Fiber 3.0 %
Calories 1667 Kcal/lb
Calories 3676 Kcal/Kg
Calories 557 KCals/Cup

By adding the additional meat, I am getting a good quality protein and enough fats for their energy requirements. The quality of the kibble is top notch and I only have to use about 1/2 a cup when I am adding additional meats. In total they get about 1 - 1 1/4 cups per day as it is SO NUTRIENT and calorie dense and there are almost NO "fillers". The digestability is really good.
I am getting SO much less smelly stool and the coat quality is GREAT.
My dogs will never go back to the likes of Diamond, Pride, Black Gold, etc.

Thanks for the replys. I have never heard anything but good about Black Gold. There seems to be mixed feelings about the Diamond. I will stick to the Black Gold. The extra cost isnt much, and I will start buying more at one time so I dont have to make the trip as often. Thanks again for the input. Vince Z.

I switched from Pride to Purina Pro Plan. My hounds look better and run better and I get way less stool to clean up. I tryed to stay away from the high prices but I found the extra money is worth it.

Hey Vince, those two hounds I got from you were eating Diamond here for a while, but they started losing weight as did my other hounds...I switched to Purina Hi Pro, they have filled out again and look healthier than they did on the Diamond...I have fed Diamond for years, but lately its been hard on my hounds, hence the switch....BTW, how was your trip to Drummond????
