What is the best dog you've ever seen run?

The best dog I ever watched run a rabbit was RCH Branko's Sky High. He was out of FTCH Branko's Jack of All Trades. (I can't remember the dam). He came from Branko's kennel as a broke hound and when I saw him he could flat out run a rabbit. He was not blistering fast by today's standards, but could turn on a dime and just "float" with the rabbit. I watched the dog several times run solo and with a pack. Like most hard going dogs he ran best solo because he could get a little competitive at times with a pack.

He had hunt, foot, line control, above average nose, sense, and a nice mouth to boot. I wish I had a kennel full like him.

Do you know how many litters Ivy has had and what type of results were produced? Never seen her run so what can you tell me about her that makes her the best you've hunted behind?

Ivy has four litters on the ground. The first litter only three pups two went as house pets and the other one had a win and some places in AKC midwest, but he was blown up by being ran with over competive dogs at a young age. Not sure he is still alive or not? Second litter was off from FC Jr's Top Gun Tyke. Not sure how many in litter but I believe you have one of them. The third litter was off from my male who has two AKC midwest wins Shadycreek Boogity Boogity. All the pups stayed local in hunters hands and they all were running excellent this spring. I will know more on this cross after the gun season is over. The fourth litter was off a dog directly of Bucks Branch kalagah. These pups are only 5 months old so the jury is still out. To date I would say Ivy has not produced anything as good as herself yet. I think the litter with my male has potential to have some real fine hound in it. They were really running well on bare ground but that doesn't mean anything for this winter. The reason I say she is the best hound I have ever seen run is because of her Nose, Intelligence and hunt. She has the best nose I have ever seen on a beagle and runs a rabbit in any conditions with very few losses. When she does have a loss you know she is going to find the check and get him back up. Her hunt is endless and she jumps rabbit after rabbit no matter what pack she is in. I like to hare hunt and usually do most of my huning in Northern MI in the months of Jan Feb and March. Lets just say when the snow is old crusty and deep Ivy is never left in the box. She is simply the best gun dog I have ever seen. She has places in AKC Midwest trials, and one UKC win. I believe if she was trialed hard she would finish in any format but she is mainly just a gun dog and may only get to one or two trials a year.

Here is a picture of what I am talking about. Ivy is the second dog from the right in these photos. Not all these hounds were ran at one time. They were rotated through out the day and she never came off the ground nor did the male all the way to the left.

My Male's and Female's Daddy was the best I have seen. The first time I went out with him I knew I wanted a dog out of him. I am very pleased with both of them. Unfortunately he is no longer with us. I am happy he dropped a few pups before his time. You can see his page here.

My all time favorite is The Woofman of Smokes Creek. He is a brother to Syris Mcgee. Woof as he was known had the smarts and nose to do it right. I hunted over him when it was below zero on hare and several other times on cottontail. He caught a rabbit one day when he was 10 1/2 and retrieved it after 4 1/2 hr.s of running with a pcak of younger dogs. He was a hunters dream! I watched him win a trial when it was around 90 and he was almost 10. He ran about 7 hours total that day and the gallery watched him run a small rabbit that none of the other dogs could smell. I was told by others that watched him that he won a UKC trial one day when it was over 90 and so dry he was the only dog barking. He circled the rabbits all alone.He was one of the rare ones with a big nose but no extra mouth. He could grub or he could fly. He has a lot of nice pups around but most of them are with hunters not trialers. I have heard more good comments about him from what I consider knowledgable beaglers than I ever heard about any 3 or 4 other dogs put together. He is recently deceased but he made quite an impact on many who saw him run while he was here.

I hate to see that post. But, I would have to agree with you Mr. Baily. FC Rock Hard Super Lacie had to be one of the best I have seen. She defiantly had the perfect name. The only thing is she was missing the S on her chest and the cape on her back. I had the privilege to judge her in four trials and she won three of them. She is going to be missed and this tragedy should not happen to a nice guy like Chad.

It was 4 degrees outisde, You know one of those days where you get out of the truck and your nostrils stick together, and the type of day that seperates the good dogs from the great ones. On this day, I saw a dog named Suddiths Mississippi Dan run 9 rabbits back around to the gun. The race that sticks out in my mind is when he ran a rabbit across a frozen swamp on bare ice for about 45 minutes. Very few dogs can even smell a rabbit let alone run one in these conditions, but he did it all day. This dog is truely one of the "great ones". Mike Poupore

Seriously I have to agree with the earlier post about a pattern here. The one about the great ones seem to get better in your memory as time goes on. I got out of beagling for many years and ran coon hounds so I missed a lot of these super dogs you speak of but some of the best dogs I ever saw were old no name, no papers no champion pedigree dogs that had been raised by the same ole man for over thirty years. My freind still has some of this stock that his granfather started and they can flat run rabbits but the only place you will ever see them is in the feild on a freindly hunt just like grandpa loved it.

I am only a gun hunter I don't care much about trials.

And since I live in southern mi, most of my gun hunting is done on cottontail in poor conditions.

So the only way a dog will impresse me is if it can be a complete rabbit dog in those conditions. And be able to do it solo and in a pack.

Those dogs are rare and hard to find around here.

Kris I have no doubt she is nice. I'll take your word on that.

I just wish it was alot easier to find dogs like her, dan and rambo.

It just sad they are not the norm. As far as gun dogs are concerned up here.

I know what you mean... I have had beagles all my life while I have had some decent ones I have had nothing like her which is the complete deal. I have had some solid hounds and like what I have just doubt I will ever own a dog that good.... It is sad... The saddest thing to me is why can't we figure out some way to breed these consistent traits into our dogs. Now that I have put this on here every tom dick and harry will say Oh I got snow dog line etc etc etc.... All I am saying is I have some solid snow hounds myself but nothing with the capabilities as this bitch.
