FC Rockhard Super Lacie dies from Blasto
My field champ died a couple of days ago at just over 2 yrs old. She had a sever lung infection that came from nowhere. She was ran 3 days in a row hard and came home and died 5 days later. IT just hit her all at once. The vet just called and said her test results came in.. SHe died of what they called Blasto. I have never heard of this. They say you catch it from the ground. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Sorry to hear it, Chad. Blasto is what killed my Wells' Timber a couple of years ago. I was told he could have got it from running in an area where it was in the ground; possibly in an area that stays moist or in recently plowed dirt is where I was told it could be. It was about this time of year, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

blasto is like a fungus thats in the ground had one die about 3 years ago from this its usually found in moist area this is what my vet told me,,,,,,,,sorry to hear of your loss,,,,,,,,,she may be gone but she will always be a champion,,,,,,,,

I had a male rottie of mine come sown with Balsto abou ta year ago. He lost an eye to the stuff and the vet told me that in most dogs it affects the respiratory system but in my rott it infected his eyes. He said it is a fungus that is found in low lying areas where water frequently stands. I have a river in my back yard but none of my other dogs got it. I was lucky not to lose him but it cost me a small fortune to get him fixed back up.
yeah i bet.........but this stuff happens so quick,,,,here today gone tomorrow,,,,my male was running in a swampy area, i brought him home not know nothing was wrong and about 2 days later he was gurgling in his lungs 2 days later he was dead,,,,,,,,,,its a ruff stuff,and i belive a human can get this also,,,,,,dont quote me but i think i read somewhere that is causes bloating and severe abdomanal pain,,,,,,,,

Very sorry to hear of your loss Chad. Blastomycosis is an infection caused by breathing in the spores of a fungus. This fungus grows in wet decayed vegetative areas probably similiar to where we find morel mushrooms here in Indiana. As most fungi these give off spores and the dog or even human breath these into their lungs where they start their dirty work of inflamation and degeneration of the respiratory system.
