[color=red]Coyotes Attacking Beagles[/color]

I have had coyotes twice jump my beagles while hunting. Fortunately when they heard me yell they ran off. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm concerned what coyotes might try to do when my dogs are out in front of me a good distance bringing a rabbit around.

I've had them howl and hang around a chase for a little while down here. They don't seem to come in,, but there's always the first time!!! We are very vocal with the hounds so maybe that helps. Sooner or later ones gonna see a flash of smoke and a .44 cal ball coming his way from my 1851 Navy Colt. I can just feel it happening as we get into winter weather conditions and their food supply dwindles... Good luck to ya!!!

Some folks attending a beagle field trial had their beagles attacked by coyotes. I will shoot any coyotes I can.

Mark,
My cousin and I were night running about a year ago when we had one of our dogs attacked by coyotes. Since then we started running our hounds with bells on their collars. It doesn't matter if we run at night or day we keep bells on them. Also the bells seem to help us keep up with our hounds during the day when we are hunting think cover. I'm not sure they prevents the coyotes from attacking but we haven't had any trouble since using the bells. The bells only costs $2-3, they seem well worth the cost for our use.

Bells don't work here anymore. It is just a dinner call for the coyotes. I have lost one while out hunting. Had a split and I went one way and two hounds went the other. One never came back. Lost one about a month ago right here around the house. She had been attacked before and had a lung punctured and had to wear a wrap for 6 wks. I always carry a gun when I am running all year round. I also stay with the pack. Guess I need the exercise anyway. NOBODY hates coyotes more than me.

oakhill, we've got to be careful packing a heater while training here in Ga., blanks only during off season's. WMA's have a small game weapon rule that eliminates .357 type heat, no center fire weapons on WMA's except during deer season's!!! Don't know if yotes'll go hard down with #6 shot or not??? Guess it depends how close they get!!! This is why a black powder pistol is in the mix for us!!! They're legal to carry during small game season...

Just a thought Crew Chief .. but you might think about a .17 HMR revolver.Taurus makes a couple nice ones and they're a rim fire but they can rip a yote out to 200 yds. and are super accurate. CHH

Thanks CHH,, good idea. The old Colt Navy has one good point though,, ifen I miss, the yote can't see me for a while, till I crank another cap in place on the cylinder and let her fly again!!!!

Mark, Where have you been running? I sure want to stay away from there.

I have heard coyotes howl and I thought they were coming in on my dogs, but they never got to them. Nevertheless I ran up to my dogs asap. I carry a concealed handgun with me in case it ever happens. I hope it does not. (It is legal to run non-furbearers in Ohio and carry a concealed firearm if you have a permit) Just so no-one thinks I am breaking the law.

The places I have had coyotes come in close to my dogs were Ceasars Creek twice, once in Ross Ohio and once in Adams County but each time they stayed a distance from both me and the hounds and were howling.

Duke, I hunt mainly Indiana. My mother-in-law has a farm there. I too carry a side arm in order to use on those critters! It's really takinf the fun out of the hunting anymore though.

I'm wondering if you are hunting with another person and between the two of you, you holler, talk to the dogs, and just make a lot of noise if that would help keep them away. I understand they won't come near people. Anyway I hope thats the case because otherwise they are going to hear from my 1911 springfield.........

Mark, I may not hit them with my handgun, but the noise oughtta send them running. In hunting season carry a couple of 3 1/2 inch 4 shot in one pocket. I have put down a couple of fox with this.

You got that right. I plan to bait these rascals in and hunt from my tree stands after deer muzzeloader season.
