Barking beagle! Help!

Post by MSU Dawg »

I've got an unstarted male beagle. He is very alpha & will bark in defense of his property. We have a privacy fence however, so if he even thinks there is anything around the house, he barks. If I go out & tell him to hush he will hush & for the most part he'll stay hushed. But if I'm not there, he will bark non-stop for hours. In fact, he's barking right now ... :bomb:

This was not a problem as we live off kinda by ourselves so he's been quiet. But now we've got some neighbors moving in & he barks at every sound they make. I don't think a day goes by w/o him barking. It's driving me crazy & I doubt the neighbors are too thrilled w/ it either.

Now before anyone suggests it, yes we will be moving! But in the meantime I am thinking about fitting this yowling critter w/ a bark collar. But I am worried that a bark collar will make him scared to open up on a hunt. What do y'all think? Will the collar teach him to keep his yap-hole shut while kenneled & not affect him on the hunt or will it scare him into not barking at all?

Any input is appreciated!

You should not have any problem with putting a bark collar on him. Most dogs that have come through our kennel have had the bark collar applied to them and I've never seen it affect them even slightly in the field even though I use training collars on them in the field.

It usually won't take long for them to figure out that barking in the kennel is a bad idea, but barking in the field has never hurt them.

I live in a sub-division and I have three beagles that I hunt with. I was worried about my neighbors complaining about the dogs barking so I put bark collars on all of them. The collars work fine and the dogs hunt as good as they ever did.
