Parvo

Post by mrwvsportsman »

How many have had experience with parvo? I have a pup with it, it is my first case with parvo. How much success have you had with them pulling throuhg? And what should I do to protect my other pups besides vaccinations? Like the ground under her pen....how should I treat it? And her box, and my dog box. I guess I will just use bleach to disinfect them. Just looking for a little advice. Thanks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In my travels I came across a man in SC gave me a treatment for parvo. He said a high percentage of pups survive. He wrote of this treatment in a hunting magazine years back and recieved many Thank You letters. Here it goes

Mix 1 part bleach to 15 parts water and give orally.
Inject Pedialite under the skin to prevent dehydration.

Death is usually caused by nausea and dehydration.

I hope this helps someone.

The vet has what you need. IV fluids & antibiotics for secondary infection. If you can keep them alive a week, they'll usually pull through.
Isolate sick puppy, bleach everything, box/floor, pump-up sprayer is good for this.
Shoes/hands/clothes anything touched can carry this. A piece of carpet damp with water/bleach is good to wipe feet on.
Always wash hands an wipe feet before handling others, after caring for the sick, best to care for the sick last when you feed, as your not apt to spread it. Their stomach has to rest as that's where the blood is coming from. Inject fluids under the belly skin and it is absorbed to rehydrate the pup while the stomach rest. Infection from the raw stomach will be kept down by the antibiotics.
Hope all goes well :( ...Patch

She is at the vet for now. They are going to keep her for about 4 days and if she shows improvement, she should be ok. I am just concerned because I read that it can live in the ground for like 9 months. I have a 3 month old pup that is kept in the same kennel, different run. They are elevated runs though, so the ground below the kennel catches all of that waste, which is how it is spread. I know the best way to keep him from getting it is to vaccinate him, but I was just concerned about him getting it. I guess I will just buy a few gallons of bleach and just spray everything. Thanks for your input.

3 months old /w good timely shots should be safe, but yet one has it.
We get our shots directly from vet supply. But, the effectiveness of the shot is only as good as the pups immune system is, too build up a resistance... Some just don't have it, even with our best of care... :(

If the pens have a common divider, most likely the other pup has been exposed also. I would spray everything down and watch the other pup for droopiness/going off food/vomiting/blood in stool... The quicker you respond to the signs, the better the chance of survival...On the other hand, if the other pups immune system is primed by the shots, he may fend it off on his own.
If he's not had any shots, get a shot in him NOW and get to spraying the bleach...Best of luck ;) ...Patch

My vet told me to bleach everything. After doing this and keeping up with bleaching every week I haven't had any problems at all with anything. I just mix 2 capfuls of bleach per gallon of water and it is enough to kill everything, yet weak enough that it won't hurt the dogs.

Thanks everyone. I am checking to see if the boosters he has been getting had the parvo vaccine in it, if not, I am getting it today and I will spray everything today and every day for about a week. This is a very scarry thing. I will just do what I can. Thanks for all of your advice.
