Titles on your dogs ????

Post by Tri-Power »

How do you folks get titles on your dogs?? Do you campaign them yourselves or do you send them with a handler?? What does this service cost?? What reputable handlers come to mind?? How long does it take to get a title on a dog?? If your a handler and do this service please email me with prices and state what i get for the price. I'm thinking of doing some dogs. Thanks for any response.

In the ring as well?

Post by Bsbowhunter »

Although I am probably on the wrong board to post this, I have a similar question concerning show handlers. I know many of the big breeders use then as they have too many dogs to title themselves in that short time frame. Who has ever used a handler/trainer for the ring? Other than the obvious (travel expenses, lodging, entry fees, grooming, etc...), what are some of the expenses and experiences of those of you who have done this? :eyes:
Sorry Tri-Power, I hope I haven't taken over your post.

show dog

I have shown beagles confirmation. I do it myself because I cannot afford a handler. Pro charges approx $75 cdn to take dog in ring for 2 minutes. That would include grooming and possibly some pre ring training. You have to pay entry fee, boarding, travel costs. It is a very pricy game. I have found that the judges see the pro better than the dog! Very political. So my beagle isn't seen to her full potential because I shown her myself. It takes me 2- 3 hours to groom the beagle for the ring, believe it or not! More grooming on a beagle than on a sheltie. I don't know what field charges but there are entry fees, transportation, boarding, training. It all takes a lot of time. Boarding is approx $15 per day. All a costly hobby but some of us pursue it like a religion!

Handling showbeagles

Post by aladarbeagles »

I am a breeder/owner/handler/ of show beagles. I have been doing this for a number of years. Yes, the show ring can be political but it is also very much related to how willing you are to learn how to be as good as a pro handler in showing your beagle to its best.

Learning to handle is just as important as learning how to groom and train a beagle to show. I have had success but it took patience, openmindedness, and a strong desire to learn, learn learn.

A B/H/O has to walk into the ring with a good quality dog, present it well and be gracious in losing as in winning. Many judges will find that quality dog.

Hiring a prohandler can be costly, if you want to investigate this avenue my first suggestion would be to contact a show breeder near you. Many times this person may handle beagles for others and yet charge less than an all-breed prohandler. They can critique your dog and give you an idea of how it might do in the ring and they can also give you input on local handlers that again may do a nice job of handling and charge less. Better yet , hopefully they will give you guidance in how to handle your own dog and let you enjoy the thrills of beating the pros! A list of show beagle breeders can be found at http://www.showbeagle.com
You must select USA breeders and then there is a listing with names and states. I have seen several pictures of field beagles that could truly do well in the show ring....I would like to see more shown.

Aldar

Aldar. I am a member of the showbeagle-list and have been to every breeders site listed (both in the US and abroad). I would love to learn more about showing in the ring, but time allows me one hobby. It's either trialing or showing and I just so happened to of picked trialing. Although breeding is many years off, I have two very promising prospects. I've got a young male out of Hal Davis' Strongbow line and have just purchased a female from Jon Woodring (Lanbur). The older male pup, at just 14 weeks old, is doing fantastic. If this trend continues, he will be competitive in the field. It is a bit early to be overly optimistic though.
I don't get a lot of time off, so if I am lucky enough to champ either one of these dogs, I most likely will have to pay for a show handler. I'm not rich by any means, but believe I can swing it. I love your idea about having a veteran show'er or judge assessing my dogs. They are too young to really tell, but I figure at about seven months, the dogs should be mature enough to reveal their faults. If they look like they have a chance, I'm goinh to go for it. If it's questionable and would take a ton of shows to champion it, I will have to consider your advice. Either learn to do it myself and postpone trialing or forgo the ring with my current stock. Undoubtedly, I am optimistic about this, but desire is half the battle. With determination, patience and lots of training, anything is possible. Thanks for the information and the good advice. BTW, are either of you going to the NBC Triple Challenge this spring? Would love to meet you and talk beagles.
