heat cycles
Females normally have 2 heat cycles per year that last around 3-4 weeks each. While your female is in heat it wouldn't be wise to run them because any male that comes up will more than likely breed her so you basically have to keep females on lockdown 2 months out of the year. I don't have a lot of space so it is easier for me to keep more males. You have to keep females away from all male dogs when they are heat. If you keep them in the house you need to put a diaper on the female to keep her from bleeding all over everything. Nothing wrong with females though, I just like male dogs better because they seem to be more durable.

I agree with you Glomski, I have 6 males and 3 females in my kennel right now and I may be selling one of the females soon.

I am glad you started with (generally). You can get some dominate females at times, and when you do they can be as tough as any male.Chuck Terry wrote:Generally:
Males and more aggressive and bold - good and bad! They do have to pee on everything and try to breed anything that stands still and are basically in heat year round. They tend to be harder headed and harder to break. However, a good male is hard to beat! Look at the top trial beagles in any registry where the males and females compete. I have never done an actual count but I THINK the males out number the females in the top slots.
Females are less aggressive and bold- good and bad! The are generally easier to train and handle (more obidient and receptive to your directions). Hoever, they are more likely to be shy or upset by strange dogs, people, or surroundings. They do not hold up as well as males when hunted hard and do not bounce back as fast after being run hard either. Last but not least is the 3 to 6 weeks per year they are out of commission.
If you want to have pups of course, the female is a necessity. For $200 plus a brucellosis test you can get use of almost any male in the country!
I personally keep about the same number of each sex.

males vs females
Yes i think different bloodlines produce males that behave differently. I've seen some bloodlines where the males basically pee on trees until the females jump a rabbit. I've also seen males that waste no time when jumping a rabbit and will pee briefly when working the check, or after the rabbit is shot.
I prefer a good male but it's hard to develop a good hunting strain without a few solid females around!
I have seen Mr. Sudduth's males....they are excellent!!

Yes you can hunt and run females while in heat. I just trialed (AKC) 2 females this weekend that were in full heat ready to be bred. I saw males that had to pee on everything and after every dog. My females could care less who they hunt and run with and don't smell every dog when turned loose. They go hunt when you turn out. Females will come in heat twice a year, while a male is in heat all year. I have had a male try to sniff on my female at a ARHA trial when she was not in heat. My female let him know what she thought and the male did not do anything in the hunt after that and the owner said he never acted like that before. Just my opinion.

I have 3 male dogs, 1 is going on 5yrs old, another is going on 4 yrs old and one is going on 3, the 4 and 5 yrs old are uncle and nephew and so far they have payed no attention to females when in the field and I have seen them hunt with females in heat and they paid no attention while 2 or 3 other male dogs were trying their best to breed the female, these dogs have always took a dump and got down to hunting so I have never understood why people complained about male dogs peeing on everything UNTIL I got this last dog that thinks if its taller than him he's going to pee on it, I would love nothing better than to put my boot up his a$$ but he's not going to be around long so it doesn't matter. if I had to choose I would go with a male dog

Jkidd5,lol I never said that my Males would not try to bred a Female in heat if she was drop on the ground while going hunting, all I said is my pack of males will hunt just as hard as Yours, are anybody elses Females,But I did have one Male that you could hunt with a female that was in heat, and He would never smell of Her,when You turn Him loose he had onething on his mind, and that was hunting for a rabbit,But if You put her in the same pin with him,He would breed Her,so You be happy with Your females, and I will be happy with My males.
All I was saying, that not all Males after You turn them loose run around peeing on everthing, and run around smelling all the other Hounds.
Have a Good Day
