What cause a female to eat pup?She has high protent food and chicken with bloom sprinkel on it.Has this happen to anyone.by the way she raise her first litter without doing the afore mention.Thanks jaires

Did you see her eat a live pup? I have never seen a bitch eat a live pup. However, if the pup dies, and it is not remeoved, she will eat it. That is natures way of protecting the other members of the litter. Can you imagine the mess if an animal left dead offspring in their nests. It would attract flies and maggots would attack the live pups. In addition the rotting flesh would attract wild animals that feed on rotting flesh.

I once owned a bitch that ate the healthy live pups of other bitches. If a pup wandered near her she would make it lunch. Yes, I witnessed this. She is no longer with me.

I had a female about 20 years ago that would eat her pups if they were touched by a human before they were 2 or 3 weeks old.
