Dog Killed by Coyote

While running Saturday morning I had a young female killed by a coyote.
The dogs had been running for about 45 min., and burning it up. All of a sudden I heard a commotion in the direction of the pack. It sounded like a fight but not really. It only lasted about 2 seconds. About 10 min. later I realized I did not here Dollie in the race. When the dogs broke down I called um out and Dollie was missing. I went into the thicket in the direction of the commotion, After about a 10 min. search my buddy called out and said he had found her. She had a couple of bite marks on her throat and a couple in her abdoman. We were confused about what happened until we found a clump of yellowish-grey hair lodged in her collar.

I figure it must have been a female coyote wtih young.

Has anyone had this happen to them?

Does anyone have any tips on getting rid of coyotes?

Dad had a coyote run in on a couple of young dogs saturday morning also. he fired a couple of shots in the air and he took off. The best way to get rid of coyotes is to shoot as many as you can.

I have had coyotes attack a couple of dogs but not kill them. Had some friends have some dogs killed by them. I try to shoot everyone I come across

I had a couple of coyotes come in on a Mtn. Cur while squirrel hunting last year. She had yipped a few times at a squirrel, and they came right on in. I shot at one and it ran off, I then shot at the other and it ran off a ways, but then came back in. I finally was able to get a bullet in it, but it got back up and ran off. I came back a couple of days later with a 12ga. loaded with buckshot, and a rabbit squealer and took out what I assume to be the first one. It certainly makes you jittery when they don't seem to be scared of you while you're shooting at them. Of course my poor shooting might of added to that.

Sorry to hear about your hound - that's unforuntate and is sadly becoming more common. You may want to try running your dogs w/ bells. Its been debate on here is it really helps or not, but I'd say you don't have much to loose. Bells have worked well for me so far.

Where in central MS are you from. All my Dad's family if from south east MS in Jasper Co between Laurel and Meredian. They come from the little town of Burns in Smith Co.

Get some strong fishing line like spider wire as mush pd test as they make it in and get some big trebel hooks,tie the hook to the line hang the from tree limbs high enough the coyote has to jump to get the bait,they won't get away. When you find one thats not half eaten hanging or torn down you'll know you got them all or they moved on. I hate coyotes,their a nusance.

We've got a problem where we run also with them darn things. We run bells all the time and have been lucky I guess. We get pretty vocal with the hounds during a chase and maybe the yotes get confused on how many people are out there. I hate them things and we're going to hammer as many as we can at night, real soon!!!!

My friend was running two young females together and one was killed by yotes and the other had five bite marks on her but she got away. I always have bells on my dogs, he said he did too, but don't know if they were just tiny bells or what. Some folks say they don't help. but what can they harm? There should be a bounty put on these useless pests. Or allow us to poisoin them. What ever it takes to cut down their numbers. They are WAY out of hand at this point.[/b]

Boy, I hate to hear this is such a common problem.

I will soon make the investment in a nice electric call and a night light. These suckers have got to go! Killing our rabbits is one thing, but killing our dogs is going to far.

I was told today that August is the time coyotes drop thier pups, can anyone confirm this?

Briarhoppers, I live near Jackson. I have offten wondered if I have any kin in Burns, MS. Most of my Burns family is from Yazoo county or West Texas.

The Coon or bird hounds shouldn't be on this land unless they ask,and if they ask I'll tell them about the sets. Coyotes have a year around season here. Nothing in the regs about this kind of set here. Besides do you want rid of coyotes or not,your choise.

I don't know what state you live in but that would be considered exposed bait. That is against the law everywhere I have been. Im sure there is something in the regulations that covers that hook hanging from a tree. Besides that it is very inhumne.
There are other options besides hooking a coyote by the mouth!

April is the month coyotes usually have pups.

This time of year though, the pups are still not hunting on their own which puts a strain on the Alpha pair.

I looked through the regs didn't see any law that said this set couldn't be used. Whats more humane,killing a nusance or letting it chew your dogs up and give them a painful death,not to mention the expence of replaceing the hound. Do what you like I realy don't care it was a suggestion. Alot of people use it,maybe thats why they don't get dogs killed by yotes. Go out and try to kill them off with a rifle they get wise to you real quick,or maybe poison them just as inhumane as the hook.------e
