pickin a pup is 100 percent crap shoot. there are duds in every litter. pick one that looks good. or you could take a tame rabbit out there and see which one chases the longest. or something like that......other than that, its a crapshoot....i always pic on looks. keith

the easiest thing to do is let the pup pick u or atleast it is for me let al the pups out and sit down teh first one to run up to u wanting to play is teh one i pick or the one who is the most adventurus (sp) the one that strays from the group or always has his or her nose to the ground. other than that it is a crap shoot like keith said

put all the pups on a picnic table and watch them. don't pick the one that jumps off or cries. pick the one that walks to edge and thinks about the best way down. the important word is thinks.

here is a link to a pup test sheet.

http://www.leerburg.com/scoresheet.htm

go thru and also read some of the other articles that pertain to puppy selection. Standards are pretty low for beagles, compared to other breeds because running a rabbit is not really a rough task,. Draw your own conclusions :D

beaglehandler, I like what your saying. I want the one that solves problems. You can almost always recognize the one that is working the problem out and how energetic and quickly they do it will indicate intelligence. I'll take the smart dog over the "bold" one that jumped off the edge with reckless abandon, or the one that cries and waits for someone else to solve the problem for them.
