Puppy comes off track

Well folks this has happened 2 days in a row, my pup keeps coming off a track early. This pup I had the most faith in because he caught a half grown rabbit 2 weeks before he was 3 months old. I have 3 pups, the other 2 are litter mates and are 2 weeks younger than the male I'm talking about. The oldest male is 3 1/2 months now, which I'm talking about now. I usually solo my pups to build thier confidence in themselves to see which level they are at. But yesterday and today I have taken al 3 out for merely fun and time together. The oldest will usually pick up first and then the fight is on because all 3 start to tear it up. But mid way in the race he will come back and mill around like he isn't interested anymore and look for another, the other 2 will keep going. He has did this 2 days in a row, but remeber he is only 3 and 1/2 months old and I believe its too early to say its a confidence thing. Will time bring him up to par, what do you all think.

Patience Grasshopper. You are expecting too much from the pups. Be happy that they return to you when they lose the line. They will stay and dig the line out once the get older and get more confidence in themselves. Most pups that age will do the same as yours. Once they lose the track they realize they are away from you and begin to look for you.

Your dogs are still young give them time. When they get older they will get over that.

With a pup like that I would try to make sure that when I went for a fun run it was in a place with no rabbits. Too much rabbit at too young an age can make one get a little goofy.To make sure I didn't mess it up I would wait until the dog is a couple months older before I gave it very many rabbit tracks. That way it will keep its desire level high as it will want it more and you have to keep them wanting it. Depends on the dog and family but I wouldn't take any chances as your pups sounds like it may be a good one and make a great dog. Some of these Beagles will blow up on you if run them too much too young. It is already trying to tell you something and you should probably listen.

I think it just loses the track and comes back to find another rabbit to run. That's what it seems like since when he comes back he keeps on looking for another rabbit and runs it one as soon as it finds one. I think he hasn't figured out how to work a check all the way yet. But my other two will work the check area like a much older hound will and I believe time will improve the one that comes off early.

Sounds like to me he is doing what he should do. If he is 3 1/2 months old he and your running him in a pack, maybe he can't take the pressure? I'd rather have one come out if he can't take the pressure, then as to stay in and have bigger problems with him down the road later. Just my 2 cents. Jesse Duncan
