TAPE WORMERS

What is the safest and beat Tapewormer. I've heard bad and good on Valbazen. What do you recommend and how often.

Droncit is the best I have used, that is what most vets will prescribe also, you can order it from the petsmegastore in australia pretty cheap without a prescription. It is expensive if you get it from a vet.

DRONCIT! As far as dosage, once is all you need. For repeated exposure (your dog has fleas or eats dead things) you can treat monthly, but most choose to treat seasonally (4 times a year).
I've never had tapes, they aren't contageous, and they are easy to spot.

I use Drontal Plus. I've never really understood why to buy Droncit as it only gets tapeworms and Drontal Plus will get all intestinal worms, including tapes. Is that correct??

Darrin: I have wondered the same thing as the price for the generic Drontal plus is very reasonable (in some cases cheaper than Droncit). It does seem that the Droncit is not quite as harsh and has less digestive effect the day after. Plus, if you are using a heartwormer that gets everyting but tape or if you already have them on a bi-monthly schedule with pancur, safeguard, or valbazen and spot a segment in one dog's stool, a complete kennel round of Drontal (or even Droncit?) may be overkill. Still, I think unless you go overboard with treatments, you are better safe than sorry when it comes to worming! I weigh the benefits against the risks and normally conclude that the worms are worse for the dog than the chemicals in most cirumstances.

Supposedly, there are several different types of tape worms. The Drontal plus is a good wormer. However, if you already worm your dogs freqently for every other type of worm, (round, hook, whip, etc.)and you need to get rid of tapes, why not use one that gets all types of tapes. You are already taking care of the rest, with your other worm medicine.
I asked the same question myself, when I first heard of Droncit. Hope this helps.

I got this from a website that sells both. I copied and pasted these descriptions.

Drontal +
Drontal is recommended for the control of all gastrointestinal worms in dogs including roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm (including hydatid tapeworm).
Drontal is a tablet formulation of three distinctly different proven drugs offering the broadest spectrum of activity. The febantel/pyrantel combination is active against roundworms and hookworms and is highly effective against whipworms. Praziquantel provides a superb level of efficiency against all the major tapeworms.

Notice the very last line above for Drontal. It says "all the major tapeworms"
I personally want to get ALL tapes, not just the MAJOR ones.

Droncit
Droncit is non-toxic and is well tolerated by dogs. After administration praziquantel is rapidly absorbed; mainly from the duodenum. Maximum blood levels occur in dogs in one to three hours after administration and are undetectable within 24 hours. Praziquantel acts extremely rapidly against tapeworms, probably killing them by direct contact. The dead worms are usually digested and hence are not seen in the faeces. There is no purgative effect.

Benefits

100 per cent efficiency against all species of tapeworms including Echinococcus granulosus and Spirometra erinacei.
Safety – Droncit is virtually non-toxic and administration of the drug is free of undesirable side-effects.
Maximum efficiency and safety with a single oral dose in either fasted or non-fasted animals.

Notice under benefits for Droncit. It says "100 per cent efficiency against all species of tapeworms"
Not all major ones, it says ALL SPECIES period.

Like I said in an earlier post, if you are already worming for other types of worms than tapes, then buy the tape wormer that gets ALL the tapes. The other worms are already taken care of with your normal worming practices.

I rest my case.
