Hey Big Dog,
How's this for a snake story? The guys were telling me this one at the kids' day cookout and bench show at the end of the spring trialing season at the Elkhorn City club. Seems that one of the handlers during a cast a while back thought he had a briar hanging on to his chaps and when he tried to kick it off, it wouldn't shake loose. When he looked down (thankfully before he reached) there was a rattlesnake hung in his snake chaps by its fangs. Gave me the creeps hearing it! Hot here too, 95 Monday! Run 'em after rainstorms and take good care of 'em as I know you will. Best wishes!

Bluegrass is right about the heat here in Michigan!! Ran a trial up in Afton last weekend which is just short of the bridge,by the time champs ran it was so hot you sweat just standing there. The cast my champion dog was in pounded hare for an hour straight and when we finally caught the dogs i thought they were gonna have a heat stroke. If my og won that cast I would have scratched him! And I was crazy enough to judge in that mess!

I dont know how you guys down south do it. I got up early sunday and had my dog down by 6:30. By 5 minutes to 7 we were in the truck. The deer flies were simply swarming. They were hitting me in the eyeballs. This heat mixed with the bugs really sucks!

time of year

Post by Big Dog »

I have been getting the dogs out 2 or 3 times a week but mostly at night now. Snakes aren't real bad in my area of NC, mostly black snakes and an occassional copperhead. I have lived in both GA and AL and it was nothing to see a snake in the middle of december or january if there was a warm day. I ain't scared of snakes unless I put my foot on them before I see them, but I don't care much for them either. Good luck running guys and may you and your dogs keep safe.

Jerry Carter, I figured those dogs of yours were rawhide tough enough to run in the hottest part of the day and fight off snakes at the same time.
LOL. Just kidding. Hope everything's going good for you guys. As of now, I am planning to be at your state hunt later this year. Might even be able to talk a few of these other guys into coming with me.
Take care.

Been TOO hot here lately! I took my Sock It To Me bitch out last night at dark for a solo run. She jumped a bunny and after two full circles, I heard her come through the the briars, sounded like she was yaking on something but it was actually her still running the rabbit, trying to bark, she had gotten so hot and over-heated she couldn't hardly bark anymore. At 9PM it was still 84 degrees and the humidity was as muggy as it comes. She came to the top of the hill and found a soggy mud puddle and made a bee-line for it and laid down in it. I saw this was enough and hooked her up to the leash, told her no more tonight ole girl.....I let her lay in the puddle for a few minutes to cool down. Be careful guys, heat stroke will take a good `un out quick. I dont think she was very far from stroking out on me. I think I'm done until this weather breaks and some cooler temps get here. :(

Bart Caudill and I went Friday night. We ran our dogs from 9:30PM until 3:30AM. We had several bumpy races, and a couple hard driving races. The dogs caught 1 rabbit. We had a good time though It was comfortable out after a rain shower right before dark.

Pine Top - I see you are from Laurel, MS. Most of my family is from Bay Springs, MS - just down the road. I'm related to the Burns and MacFarlands if you know any down there.

I've never rabbit hunted down that way, but have done a little deer hunting. Are there many rabbits down there?

KIM,
JUST GOT THE GO AHEAD TO DRIVE FROM THE DOCTOR ON WED. 6-15-05. FIRST TIME BEHIND THE WHEEL SINCE 4-14-05. YOU JUST DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH YOU MISS A THING TIL IT'S TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU.
FINALLY GOT THE DOGS OUT TO RUN THIS AM AWAY FROM HOME FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE SURGERY!!! RAN 3 & 1/2 HOURS, AND BY 11:30 IT WAS 80 PLUS. I STOPPED BEFORE THE DOGS.
BUT I'M OUT OF SCHOOL IN THE SUMMER, SO I DO MOST OF MY TRAINING, AND RUNNIN THIS TIME OF YEAR, SNAKES, HEAT, AND ALL. I TRY TO RUN 3 OR 4 TIMES A WEEK, MORE IF POSSIBLE. (honey do gets in the way)!!! START EARLY, STAY LATE. TEACHING, AND COACHING TAKES AWAY EARLY SPRING AND FALL, AND MOST OF WINTER.
WESTERN FOOTHILLS OF NC, LOTS OF COPPERHEADS, MOCS, AND A FEW RATTLERS IN CERTAIN PLACES.
I KEEP LOTS OF BENADRYAL, AND A-MOXICILLIN HANDY!!!!!! AND PICK A CHOOSE MY SPOTS. AND JUST GO RUNNIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND I'M WAY BEHIND IN MY TRAINING, SO LORD WILLING EVERYDAY THIS WEEK, AND NEXT. GET SOME TIME IN BEFORE THOSE "dog days", SET IN!!!!!!!

The evenings are cool here but the growth is really thick. Dogs have to work pretty hard to keep a track going. I still take them out for while though.
