Barrels or Insulated Boxes?
Just finished building my run, my question now is this... I have access to 55 gal barrels or can build insulated boxes. Which will be better, I live in Northern Pa, on top of a hill where the wind blows at all times. I actually had thought of building a box inside the barrel and insulating around it, but the dimensions of the box would only be 15" high X 15" wide by the time I got insulation in there. Thinking this would be too small. Help me out here.
i use plastic 55 gallon drums for houses and they work great..they are windproof water proof(exvept for the hole that they go into) and they dont rot or hold flees like wood..they dont hold moisture either...and i dont really need all the insulation around here because the coldest it ever gets is the lower teens...sometimes it gets to 0 but not often at all....but it mite be different where you are....hope this helps...keith
Like Keith, I use the barrels. Dont stay cold for long periods here and besides, I plunked down the $$$ for one of the insulated houses and still have it. Came into some of the barrels and put one in the pen with them and guess what they stay in. Soon all my dogs will have their own barrel. You can make them virtually wind proof and keep all rain out too if you want. If you can get enough barrels to do it just use 2 barrels for one doghouse. Cut the bottom and top out and slip it over the end with the door cut out and tada, you will have a completely dry doghouse at all times and keep the majority of wind out to boot.
