I would say generally, hare breeding is faster with more endurance. Hare breeding works just fine on cottontails as long as you don't want to run the same rabbit all day and as long as they were started on cottontails as a puppy. Switching hare dogs to cottontail can be a challenge and maybe unsuccessful. I hope this helps.

Come on you guys, you have got to be kidding!
There are lots of cottontail hounds out there that can flat pound all day. I know I am not the only one that has them, I've seen others that were just as tough. My Rising Sun hounds are cottontail bred and I run them on hare and rabbits all the time. They do each just as well and just as fast under the right conditions. The difference I have seen is that hounds regardless of breeding have a tougher job and in some cases just never get the hang of running cottontails after they have been used on hares all the time. They are two different styles to be sure, but cottontails first and then hare, opposed to the other way around in my experience. That quality of jumping in the brush and digging out a cottontail and keeping it going takes alot more thinking ,than getting up a hare and cruising along after it. I love how lots of fellas over the years would say "oh it must have holed up" only to have that one hound stay thee and work things out and begin running it again. Tenacity, "stick to it ness" is the difference between lots of good hounds and the few real great ones. Most strickly hare run hounds I have seen, lack the patience for that kind of running. Just my experience. Oh and if there are any other cottontail runners out there who have hounds that can pound all day (NOT WALKIE TALKIE) please speak up. I know I am not alone in the world. Right!

When my life on earth is ended....this is all I'm gonna say...Lord I've been a hard working pilgrim on the way!
Nope You Aint Alone NYH
I do agree with you that if you start em on Cottontail First they seem to do just fine on both!!! Ours Run Cottontail most of the time but we do also run Some Snowshoe, Black and Whitetail Jack (Hares) And Our Native Brush Bunnys (Smaller than a average Cottontail) Ours Run each just as hard!!!
They Definatly aint no Walkie talkies here!!! Most are UKC/ Midwest SPO Style (Or so I have been Told)
I do have to admit they seem To like runnin the Jacks and Snowshoes though The races last alot longer and alot Further out But the Dogs just keep poundin on em I have seen them put a lot of presure on A snowshoe!!!
