I have used the pyramid and caught several rabbits. I was using the wooden-sided wire topped one and about 1 out of 3 rabbits would severely injure themselves on the wire top. Running and jumping into it. So I took the wire off and replaced it with a piece of paneling. But i left about 4 inches at the hinge end open all the way across. Then I took 1x4 And made a small door that ran along the hinge end. Cut the 1x4 in half or so and hinge it on top. Leave a small 3/8"gap between the paneling and the door. So when you get one pick up bottom of the trap and tip the rabbit down by the door (hinge) end of the trap. Then slide in a thin piece of wood in the gap. This cuts the rabbit off and only gives him 4 inches or so of width so he can't run from you. When you open your door the rabbit will go to the back and he has no where to go. This has worked very well for me. Seems alot less stressful to the bunny. When they saw me alot of them just FREAKED!! Only problem with this modification would be if you caught a skunk but i think you would smell it.?? You can always peek in the door to make sure its a bunny. What do you all think? Hope this all makes sense?!!!

Trigger System

Post by thornie »

I was wondering if someone could show a better view of the trigger system. I will be coming to Ind. this weekend and if anyone close has one maybe I could look at it.

For those of you using apples as bait. Sprinkle them with table salt. Leave a very, very small peice outside the trap door. Once they get a taste. They will come right in for more.

Pyramid Traps

Post by Hunt6 »

Well after all the advice I built a couple.I combined the two designs of wire top and the all pyramid type with 1 x 2's.I used a 1 x 6 wooded side with three layers of 1 x 2 offset pyramid style on top.

Topping it of with a hinged 6 x 12 door to retrieve the caught rabbit.
Used Bunnycides trigger. We'll see.Should work and be a lot easier on the rabbit than the wire top.

I had a round cage I used with coons for pups.Rabbits would darn near kill the selves running into the sides when I tried it for beagle pups.

Pyrimid for hunt6

Post by BriarHopper6 »

Hunt6 read your post about cutting down cedar trees for cover. One of the guys at our beagle club mentioned "Living brushpiles". This was done by cutting the cedar about 2 feet off the ground but not cutting all the way thru ( about 2/3 of the way) push it over and the hinge thats hanging on to the stump will let it live on and on. When we got a group of them together we pushed them over towards each other like a circle. gave the bunnies a place to get out of the weather and wind. Try it it works

Briarhopper6 many thanks.Come to think of it I have such a cedar up top on a ridge top.Actually two.One was an accdent mind you:) I sighted my 50 cal ml in using it as backstop. It hinged over as you said. The other was storm damage. I've jumped several rabbits under and around them going in to deer hunt.

Good idea.Thanks.Oh and Bunnycide's trigger system is slick.I used picture hanging wire to run from a screw in eye on the treddle that the rabbit steps on back to the short section of the trigger. Slick.Good bunch of people here.
