Bedwetter

Post by Meltam1 »

Need help. We have a 4 y ear old make and 3 year old female Beagles and our females has been giving us problems for the last couple of years by jumping up on our bed and peeing. We've rubbed her nose in it and punished her but nothing seems to work. This is not a daily thing, more like monthly or longer. We let her outside often and have come home 15 minutes after letting her out to find pee but have also been gone for 8 hours with no problems. Please help.........

Sounds like she's either got separation anxiety problems, is being territorial with your other dogs, is fighting for alpha status with you, or is "punishing" you. I am assuming that you've ruled-out separation axiety issue, so it sounds like a tug-of-war between her and you, or her and your male.

Bed status can be important in a dog hierarchy, even to the point that sleeping closer to (or at) the head of the bed is for the alpha. It's possible she's just claiming dominance over either you or the other dog by marking the bed.

It's not uncommon for dogs to upset their owners by suddenly doing destructive things or by peeing, either as a way to get attention or simply as an act of defiance. The first thing my male dog did when I brought him home from a one-week boarding stay at a kennel (his first) was to go into the bathroom (which was off-limits to him), look me right in the eye, and pee on the floormat right outside of the shower. My wife had a similar encounter with her female, who didn't seem to care for being punished for tearing up a pillow and proceeded to wet the bed later that day.

I'd start off by keeping your bedroom closed-off when you are not at home, and you may want to make the bed and all furniture off-limits in general to get across the message that you're the alpha.
