Starting pens
Explain please how you use a starting pen. No one has one around me.

Getting back into rabbit hunting after a lon hiatus. Hope to make new friends and catch up on what I've missed.

I START OFF AT ABOUT 4 MOS LETTING THE PUP JUST GET OUT GIVE THEM A TAME RABBIT TO PLAY WITH .THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS I USE MINE FOR IT WOULD TAKE AWHILE TO TELL YOU.BUT HERE IS THE BOTTOM LINE .RUN A RABBIT SOLO HANDLE I USE A DEER AND FOX BREAKING METHOD IN MY PEN. MINE IS BIG ENOUGH TO SOLO A BIG DOG LEARN THEM TO WORK A THICKET AND MUCH MORE I HOPE THIS HELPSIT IS NOT VERY DETAIL BUT YOU MIGHT GET THE IDEA.

Mines about 2 acres Bayou Beagler. It's great for starting pups, it's ok for soloing 1 dog, but not very often. Dogs learn the routes too quickly. I bought the coated apron wire from Byrne and couldn't be happier with mine. All total I spent about $1100.00 (Sounds like some Yankin pups are getting bigger.)

Hello,
I just purchased a female tri-colored from a breeder, when she was 6 weeks old. My friend purchased two of her brothers from the same litter. they are all 14 weeks now and we needed to have a pen for them to at least get started, so I went to Home Depot and purchased 300ft of "SILT FENCE" 30inches tall. We made a pen in my woods and made brush piles and I dug dens with dual entrances out of some natural dirt mounds in the woods, added ceder shavings, covered them with logs an sticks and leaves. Now we have a small training pen, it may only last a while but it costs $23.95 for 100ft and is easily installed. I got 3 tame rabbits that I put in the pen a while before we get the dogs, so they can leave scent trails and get in position. Then later we add the dogs and work on commands.
Though it is small it seems to be working well and I plan on using my live traps to add Wild rabbits and not have to use the tame rabbits. Then when the wild rabbit population gets going, we'll trap some out of the pen and add them to our hunting hot spots so we will have rabbits to hunt for many years to come. And so goes the circle of life.
