They aren't field champion only trials. They are championship/open trials meaning field champions can run against non field champion dogs.

I've seen a number of hunting hounds that develop to their peak and then decline whether it be mental, conformation issues, health or premature age, some just reach but can't hold it. I try to keep in mind the "total hound". Somehow being in a hurry with hounds is like my typing, many do-overs...lol
Thanks for your attempted belittling my post, I value you opinion highly also... ;)
I just happened upon this so forgive my tardiness in responding. My response to your post wasn't to belittle it, but to merely contradict your statement that a FC "flames out". Maybe that wasn't your intention, but it appeared to be so according to your statement. The system is not perfect by any means, but I challenge you to find me a field champion that cannot effectively pursue a rabbit. Anyway, I completely agree that being in a hurry with hounds is not logical and the end game could get messy. Thus the reason for my disapproval of allowing a win and/or points being awarded for derby trial placements. I don't think we are in disagreement with this thread's subject.

Not all judges are hunters but hopefully all field champeen's are.
I seen lots of field champs with no hunt, most except the me-tooers could run a rabbit after it was jumped. Lots of time it's easier to fool a judge then it is to figure out a rabbit. One thing I liked about the UKC motto statement, "show me the rabbit".
In my old fashion opinion, judging from the rear all the time leave you guessing and going along with what the majority of hounds do, whether they're right or wrong. Competition, strange packmates, conditions of the day all render hounds apt to be fooled and lead to error. In trials you pay for a man's opinion, lots of fun and fellowship. jmho

The wins were increased because there were becoming more trials, now it seems 3 is to tuff so open one up to a derby win. It all sound like a balancing act. jmho
