I have fed Diamond for the last 5 years. Yellow bag in the summer, green bag in the winter and mix them during the fall and spring. I have not noticed any difference or change to date. May be the distribution chain I am buying from and the new bags haven't got here or something.

I typically buy it from a local co-op, but was on the other side of town and stopped by a TSC to get 4 bags. I asked them if they had had any complaints about Diamond lately and they said not a word. They said that the only thing recently is that they can only get the green bags and all the others have been real hard to get - don't know if that has anything to do w/ anything.

Just my $0.02. I plan to stick w/ Diamond until I see a reason in my dogs to make a change.

Here's the e-mail I got back from Diamond. I'm gonna stay with it a little longer. At least they are good enough to investigate the problem.
Here's the e-mail.

James,

Are you having trouble with all of our dogs or just some? Which of the two
feeds are you having the problem with? Hi-Energy is a very popular food, but
is very high in ash and not very digestible. Meat meal fluctuates widely in
quality. To keep the protein at 24%, the ash can range from 7% up to 13%. If
it stayed at 7-8%, this would be great, but it doesn't. The Diamond Puppy is
made with chicken by-product meal, a consistent ingredient and it is much
more digestible. I would recommend switching any of your dogs that are on
the Hi-Energy to either Premium Adult or the Puppy.

Let me know if you're also having trouble with the Puppy formula, so I can
see if I can investigate more fully.

Sincerely,

I sent an e-mail to Diamond and have gotten a response from them. I had to send them a production, DPAO702A12GWW0991 BEST BEFORE13/JAN/06. You guys can check your bags. Here is a copy of the two e-mail I received, it does sound like the are going to look into it.

1st e-mail

Dear Robert,

The formula has not been changed. It sounds like you possibly got a lot
of
bags that has a problem. Please e-mail me the production code and best
before date so I can investigate for you. I would expect that if
everything
is fine with your dogs, and I find something strange with this batch,
that
your next batch should return your dogs to normal.

Are they eating more than normal? If it is much colder than normal, and
they
are eating excessively, this might explain some of the symptoms they
are
experiencing.

Sincerely,

Dr. Melissa Brookshire

2nd e-mail

Robert,

I requested the production information from our South Carolina
facility,
where this particular batch was made. I also requested that they send a
sample to a laboratory for me.

Can you get a couple of bags with a different date code to try while
I'm
working on investigating? I expect this is isolated to this batch and
that
you should see a return to normal with a different lot.

Sincerely,

Dr. Melissa Brookshire

The exact same as what I do mostly.I feed the puppy formula also.I discard the bags (store in a barrel at kennel) so I have no numbers to send in.

I got an email from Diamond much the same as the above ones.I hope they are the same good food.I'd hate to swich. But I got bags from a bad batch. My dogs are on a monthly worming schedule and are taken very good care of aka bedding etc etc.

Side Note : If Diamond got enough emails asking about this I dare say they would sit up and take notice..

I am jumping in a little late on this one. Two winters ago I noticed my hounds getting really " poor " on diamond yellow in the winter, even with uping the ration. Coats looked dull, see top 2 ribs, ect. I switched over to green bag and no problem. I had been feeding diamond yellow for 5 yrs previously from 3 different sellers. I now mix 50% Ole Roy and 50 % green bag diamond and dogs do real well on it. Stools, look good, coat nice and shiny. Still at 1 1/2 cup per day per beagle.

Well, I'll tell you what I'm seeing. I don't have a lot of experience with Diamond. About two months ago I switched to Diamond Professional 30/20 for the winter. The problem I encountered was a lot of waste and very large and loose stools. I never had a problem with waste falling through my above ground kennel flooring before like I now had with Diamond. It was a big mess compared to what I was used to. I recently switched to Purina Pro Plan Performance and the stool is 1/2 of what I was getting on the Diamond and its hard and small. This is the best I've ever fed. It is a little pricey.

I bought 4 bags of Black Gold last weekend to give it a try.

My question is if the Diamond High Energy has alot of ash "which they stated is hard to digest" why do they put it in the food for?

Go with the Pro Plan!!!!!! I've been feeding Pro Plan Chicken & Rice for about two weeks and my dogs have never looked or acted healthier! I would NEVER feed Diamond for the simple reason that folic acid is the last vitamin on the list, and it is the single most important nutrient for stud dogs and brood bitches. Folic acid is well known for lowering the risk of birth defects and it does seem to give either slightly larger or thriftier litters.
I don't know of any breeder including myslef, that has had long term luck in the whelping box with a food low in folic acid.
Besides that, Diamond is very low in kcals per cup, so you feed more to keep weight on dogs. I've fed Canidae, Blackwood & now Pro Plan, which were all high in kcals. If I fed 1 1/4 cup to the largest dogs in the worst conditions, that was a lot.
My 2 cents...

:( WEll I see now that it isn't just my hounds having the trouble with the Diamond. I have been feeding Diamond 21/12 and 24/20 since the early 90's and you couldn't tell me there was a better brand. My hounds look starved now and are eating twice as much to mantain their low weight. I have de-wormed them, changed back to the lower protien but increased the amount thinking they just weren't processing the higher energy and they STILL look bad(I fed the 24/20 in winter). The worst thing is if I AM able to get a little weight on them, one weekend of running takes it right back off. Also, many of my hounds couldn't eat the 26/18 becuase it made them so nervouse. It was like they were on a jittery sugar high).
Diamond used to have the BEST product but today I am out to find a feed my hounds can eat. It is pure junk now. I can't find Pride in my area and Black Gold doesn't have any distributers. Will let yall know what I try and how it does. This stinks :!:

I was feeding Diamond (Green). I have been using Black Gold (26/18) for about a week and a half and I love it so far! I produces even less less stool than the Diamond and the odor is not as bad. The really good part is the dogs are gaining weight on the same amount as before an the coats are MUCH better already. The main problem I see is that they probably won't be full at feeding time this summer when I have to cut back on feed quantity to keep them from getting fat. Another issue is that of having to go to more trouble to get it as it is not available locally for me.
