A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)

great post! What two or three Patch dogs do you like to keep up close? When you do make a cross are you trying to improve any traits or just duplicate?
The only patch blood I have ever owned was through Cinnamon Run Honey pups. She was outcrossed so she wasn't "pure" patch with her litters.
What Patch dogs are placing in AKC or are there any FC Patch dogs out there?
What patch dogs are LPGRCH or GRHBCH that are available for studs?
Any Patch dogs winning in PKC?

Most of mine were line bred pennyroyal patch Casey, jack Palmer had most of his line bred to Casey. Jack liked casey, others did not. He got his first hounds from the patch kennel in the 50's or 60's. Then he brought in superior patch rawhide who came from the patch kennel around 1998, I owned two dogs out of rawhide and sissy. Outstanding hounds, big hound heads and body's. Both over 15 inches. The patches I've owned, most have been over 15. Might be why not many are trailed. After a couple of breedings I quit sending AKC papers off, so mine turned into grade hounds. To be honest I don't know why I was breeding other lines into the patch blood, i gave em a double shot of turbo and a dash of ace in the hole. I liked what I had, mine where tight mouthed and rough around the edges and still are but that's what I like. If I was buying today I'd want to see some of their relitives run, and if the person doing the selling can't tell you how the grand or great grand parents ran they don't know their dogs.

The dogs with the least faults, when line breeding faults on both sides double on the pups. I only breed now when I need replacements in the pack. I don't do the field trail thing. Haven't sold a pup sense 2004.
I don't see it as who has better or whatever ego is in the way....
You can go to the MAN or the man who knows the man.....I have done it both ways....going to the original...or "THE MAN" probably will give you the results you desire.
This is not just an issue with the Patch hounds.....

Agree...but if you are really interested in the bloodline you should be inclined to just listen, listen, and listen to what the guys who have been breeding the line have to say. I may not agree with anyone in the end, but this is what makes breeding dogs fun. Learn all you can about these bloodlines, and then try not to repeat the bad.

There are bloodlines and kennel names. Two difrent things. If a bloodline has been bred for generations and you bring in a new sire or dam it's half of what the original was. A year later you bring in another new doner, you got 25% old bloodline 75% new bloodline. Now you have kennel name not bloodline.

SR I had to go dig out some old pedigrees, you got my brain working. Don't have any of those dogs but pennyroyal patch Casey is in em a few times, with JLT hounds. JLT equals speed, he bred fast hounds. Still does or so I've been told. I picked up two hounds from him that where wind splitters, didn't like to be handled. Could care less if you ever touched em. But would run till you thought they were going to die from loss of blood.
I know there one guy here in Michigan you can't trust the papers . Another guy in the Deep South you can't trust the paper . If u see a patch hound u like buy it but don't trust the papers . Enjoy running .
LW, there are a number of folks who take pride in their hounds and their breeding. Sorry you ran into the wrong crowd. I got lucky and found a good group of guys to work with. They didn't all like exactly the same hound, but through running with them and seeing hounds they produced, I've blended enough to make me happy tho the variations still show up sometimes. I liked ole stupe, tempered with a little yates breeding, it makes line control and patients to work the checks of a cottontail while still being able to run hare for a few days in a row.
Scrub, if these hounds are ran free cast growing up and you don't build the bond, yes they will go hunting and not care if your there or not. The nature that Randall bred into them was to go find a hare, as he said, "once cast, they can forget about me, i'll be in at the kill".
It's amazing that what he said he bred for and instilled in these hounds is still evident in their nature and ability today if bred correctly.
can anyone post some pictures or videos of current patch blooded dogs, i read the book and really like the dedication guys have to these dogs, just never seen any footage of them in action. no one out my way has any patch blood that i know of.

This is one of my favorite clips made up by Pete Marra's daughter-inlaw Stacy. It shows the folks and the enjoyment they get from their hounds. My son, Bud and myself even got in on the production...lol...we all had a good time together.
