Hi all,
I just found this site while surfing the hunting links and seems like a good bunch of knowledgable folks here so I thought I'd drop by and give a shout to see if I can get some advice. I was wondering if some of you Va. area beaglers / rabbit hunters might be able to steer me in the right direction with some advice on getting started beagling / rabbit hunting in the S.E. area of Va.
I've been an avid deer hunter since moving to Va. about 15 yrs. ago, mainly because all the private land around here is leased up by the deer clubs and it's hard to find places to small game hunt. Anyway, thanks to a recent herniated disc in my back, I think my deer dragging days are over for a while. I used to rabbit hunt alot in New England before relocating here and that is truely my first love when it comes to hunting. Never had dogs, just used to do the brush pile thing and kick em up, but it's always been a passion of mine. Anyway, I figured this would be a good time for me to get started, as I could get a couple of pups or started dogs and have the time to work with them to be ready for next season.
I've got permission to hunt a fairly good size farm locally that is not leased to a deer club, the landowner says the rabbit population isn't that great due to a heavy fox population, but the feed and cover is good so I'm sure it holds a few bunnies anyway. Can someone recommend a good breeder in my area (Norfolk, but I don't mind traveling) where I could get a couple of pups or started dogs from good hunting stock?
Are there any local hunters that would be willing to let me run with their dogs to help train, either on the land I've got access to or your land? I don't mind traveling a couple of hours in any direction, including N.C.
I really hate comming on a board and asking this but all my hunting partners are hardcore deer hunters, and look at me like I've lost my mind when I bring up the subject of rabbit hunting. Thanks for any advice you might have. Safe Hunting, Yankee Bill :)

What county/city are you in? I am from VA but currently reside in NC within 1 hour of certain parts of VA. Tell me where you are and maybe I can refer you to someone.

Hi Big Dog,
Thanks for the reply. I'm in the Norfolk / Chesapeake / Va. Beach area ( the Southeastern most corner of the state). I'm 30 minutes north of Currituck, Co. and 45 minutes north of Elizabeth City, NC. According to the location you have listed in your title (Kernsville) you are pretty close to my deer hunting stomping grounds. I deer hunt just North of you in the Martinsville, Va. area, my wife's kinfolk are from that area also, but my hunt club there is a 4 hour ride from my home here in Norfolk. Thanks for any input you might have. Safe Hunting, Y.B. :)

Martinsville is only 1 hour away from me, and I have some running grounds in Madison NC, which is only about a half an hour from martinsville. My best running grounds are here in Kernersville though. If you are ever down this way I would be glad to run with you. I have 8 dogs that I run 3 to 5 times a week dependent on the weather and other things I have to do. I used to live in Hampton so I know the area you are in well.

Hey Big Dog,
When I looked at the map I didn't realize you were quite that close to Martinsville. I actually hunt on TurkeyCock Mountain (hey I didn't name it, I just hunt there:-), our club property abutts the WMA land there. Don't know if you know where that is or not. Wife has kin up in Ferrum, va. in Franklin,co. Did you used to run dogs when you lived in Hampton?
Do you know anyone that might have some good hunting stock for sale in my neck of the woods? Usually get out that way in late summer for a club work weekend and for Muzzle loader/rifle season.
As I mentioned in my original post I messed my back up pretty bad this year so I don't know how much deer hunting/dragging I'll be doing in the future. When I went to visit my Chiropractor after this season he asked me if I had any luck deer hunting, I told him I shot a nice 8 pointer during the black powder season and he said thats too bad, you should have shot a little doe! When I asked him why, he told me that I had herniated a disc in my back dragging the buck up the mountain. Ah well, that's the price we have to pay for our pleasure I guess. I'd be glad to give you a shout next time I head out that way. If we don't have time to run maybe we can just grab a coffee and make some future plans. I've meet some good people on some of these boards. In fact, I met my hog hunting buddy on another board. Thanks for the reply. Safe Hunting, Y.B.
