Southcentral Tennessee Question

Post by big w beagles »

My wife and I going to visit the Southcentral Tennessee next week with the idea of looking for a place to stay next winter. My wife is looking for a warmer place for the winter than what we have in Ohio. I have been looking in the Winchester, Fayetteville, or Tullahoma area. Is one area a nicer place over the other area towns? We are open to other communities, but these areas were mentioned in a previous topic. I talked to a realtor, but she did not think we could find just a place for the winter. I want to be able to hunt rabbits with my dogs. If we can not find a suitable location, I'm afraid we will end up in Florida. Any help would be appreciated.

I lived in Manchester,Tn. for 15 years which is right next to Tullahoma. This is Coffee County. There are five Tn,state wildlife management areas in the county and all have rabbits on them.A.E.D.C. [Arnold Engineering Devbelopement Center---Air Force Base ] 32,000 acres,Bark Camp Barrens 2,800 acres,Hickory flats 800 acres,Maple springs 122 acres,Normandy 750 acres.Best running in the off season, during gun season they all get hunted pretty hard.Best deal would be once you get settled in an area try and connect with farmers/landowners to get permission to hunt private land.
Winchester is in Franklin County and there are three WMA's there;Bear Hollow Mtn.17,000 acres,Owl Hollow Mill 3,000 acres and Mingo Swamp 460 acres.
Fayetteville is Lincoln County and doesn't have much in the way of state land but there is a lot of farm land there that you might get on if you make the right connections.
Half way between Tullahoma and Winchester is little town of Estill Springs. They have an active beagle club [North Franklin County B.C. ] that holds A.R.H.A. Little Pack trials and I've heard they are also now having some P.K.C. beagle trials.
Hope this helps and good luck.

I live in East TN not 2 far from Dana . I MHO is and this come's from alot of travel with-in the state all the TWRA land and TVA land really all public lands R hunted hard due to lack of private land . Like other places some hunters have ruined private land owners from letting us good guys hunt . I more than welcome u toour state & wish U all the best . In the off season U will find pretty good run'n on these state lands for sure . Like Daina , said but I'll go 1 steep farther , spend some time rideing around meet'n farmers be nice , respectful and offer to help with farm cores and U will find some that will atleast let U run and when they see U r a good guy and respectful of their land & rules it can turn into hunt'n as well.
Then offer some of the game U take or to take them along or a small gift even at Thanksgiving or Christmas. It's worked for me , but I don't care much bout taking rabbits just the run'n but it's worked out both ways .

Think about middle TN to, I live in Columbia and have a farm. Me and Paul Grebel hunt a lot together. Ill be glad to let you hunt and run with us. I can introduce you to a few people around here that hunt a lot, We have a few public spots as well there is 13-14 thousand acres that’s public, I do a youth hunt with the TWRA wardens for the kids here in Columbia every year.

I'm staying in Manchester for a couple days while we explore the area. The ADEC, does a person need a pass? I just wanted to see what the hunting areas look like.

The areas that are open on the base during hunting season are gated off during closed season. There is no off season running allowed and I don't believe any access is allowed. It used to be open for the coonhunters to run in the off season but so many people were planting pot in there that they stopped letting public in except during open season.
