darrin,,,,,,i started feeding the high pro about febuary and my dogs were fine, then i switched to the other diamond food,,the adult formula and my dogs started loosing a lot of wait and filled the kennels with stool,,,,now here is the kicker, all my dogs are seperated in single kennels and the started scratching real bad and thier hair is getting real thin and falling out,,,,,,i got one more bag of food and im switching away from it completely,,,,,,

I have fed the 24/20 for a couple of years now and haven't had any problems with it. I just bought a new bag, I will see what happens with it and comment if I see any change. I can get Black Gold for a little more money and just about the same distance drive... I stayed with Diamond because it doesn't burn up my grass where the dogs urinate. I don't know if Black Gold would be so gentle on my lawn or not.....

Well, I notice now that my dogs look really skinny. Even after increasing the amount due to the cold.

I have a question, does anyone that feeds Black Gold have their dogs out on their lawn? Do you get burn spots in your lawn where the dogs urinate? If Diamond gets cheaper on this formula, it is only a matter of time before they go the same route on their other ones. IMO...

Feed used to come with a lot of corn, this would make a poor coat. Adding Codliver oil will bring back the coat, but a well balanced feed should not need supplements.

Well, I finally bit the bullet and switched over to Black Gold. It costs me $16/bag of the black bag stuff and I will switch to the maintenance once hunting season is over. I would imagine that will be cheaper. The only problem is that I have to drive 15 each way to get it.... I will let you know what I think once I can give some honest opinion.

I tried Diamond two years ago and had smaller litters, rough coats, and the dogs crapped like horses. The good price isn't worth the aggrivation.
The best thing I tried that keeps weight on the dogs is Blackwood 2000 formula. I feed a 14.5" bitch 1 1/4 cup in the worst weather, and two cups during whelping. My 75lb German Shepherd guard dog gets 3 1/2 cups of the stuff and looks great. I pay $38 for a 40# bag.

Emery... you get lawn burns from acidic urine. When the urine is alkaline and more watery in color, you don't get the lawn burns. Any food that makes urine alkaline is not good for the dogs, from what I've seen. They need that acidic pee to kill off bacteria in their urinary tract, and when they don't have that acidity, you can get urinary tract infections and life threatening kidney problems down the line.
I hose the yard down every day in the warm weather and in cold weather I spot clean where the dogs pee a lot with warm water. Flushes out all the pee so it doesn't kill the grass.

I have benn running dogs for awhile now and have never fed diamond but run against dogs that had been fed diamond. I have fed Hi-Tech, Sportsman Pride, and now I feed a new dog food in my area called Cody Brothers. I own a feed store and sell the Cody Brothers feed and Pride- 22-10, 22-16, 24-20, 26-18, 27-18, 30-20 puppy food. I sell alot of the Pride feed and alot of hound owners are very pleased with it, as for the Cody Brothers, it is a good feed but just hasn't been out very long. I have been feeding it a year now and it compliments my dogs very well. At the last ARHA hunt at Elkhorn City Beagle Club they were a few members talking about the same topic on the Diamond feed so something must be wrong.

What do you guys think about Purina Hi Pro?? We switched our pups off the puppy chow and put em on it, they sure do love the stuff. They are 12 months and 8 months and Me and Donna are all confused about this feed thing..

Since I made this post I have quit feeding the Diamond Hi-Energy 24/20 (maroon bag). My dogs kept looking worse and worse on it so I quit feeding it. It's a shame because when I was feeding it over the last year, it seemed to be great feed.

I have now been feeding the Diamond 26/18 (green bag) for close to 2 months now and my hounds are doing quite well on it and I am pleased so far. Their coats have slicked back up some and they have gained some weight back. So far so good. I tried a couple of bags of the Pride 24/20 and I had a couple of hounds keep the runny's on it, so I didnt buy any more of it either.

I use the green bag also with no problems. However, I was wanting to drop some of the protein come warmer weather. Doesn't sound like that's going to be a good option less I switch to lower protein but different brand and I really don't want to try that. lol

Pride 24/20
I was told by the rep we started working with that I wouldn't be happy with the 24/20 blend, the company is working on a new formula of it. Sorry you had issues with it, I have continual great success with the 26/18, and will keep using it, perhaps thats an option for you....

asti, I tried a couple of bags of the Pride 24/20 and I had a couple of hounds that got runny stool on it and it did not clear up until I switched to the Diamond 26/18. I myself did not like the tiny size of the feed either. I may try a bag of the Pride 26/18 in a few weeks after my supply of Diamond runs out. We'll see I guess!
