Sportmix wholesomes Review

Post by jlboomer »

Well i know how some people feel about dog food and dog food reviews but i like to post them ever so often if im having any luck with anything. Im a huge fan of sportmix in general over the past 20 years or so i usally always find myself going back to the 24/20 in the black bag and for the most part really like it it runs me around $24.99 for a 40lb bag sometimes i can get it in 50lbs for around $29 but thats not often. Im getting off topic a bit here this revies is for there new line of Sportmix Wholesomes chicken and rice

Ive been feeding this for about six months now so i think i can give a pretty good review. Ive been feeding 8 dogs 6 beagles and 2 mountain curs. On average the beagles get 1 1/2 cups a day and the curs get 3 cups a day this is an 8oz measureing cup not a small coffe can or a big gulp cup but a standard measuring cup. I work for a living so my dogs usally get ran 2 days a week and try to get the pups out 3 days a week. I started out feeding my older dogs 2 cups a day but with only running them 2 days a week they started putting on extra weight and that really suprised me during these colder months. Another thing that suprised me was how my pups kept good weight and i had to back them off to 2 cups a day unless i was running them over 5 or 6 hours when i took them out then i just feed about a half a cup more. These pups are between 5-8 months old i fould while feeding the original sportmix puppy food i was feeding atleast twice this amount so that was a big deal. The price did scare me at first $29.99 for 40lb bag but i get a price break on it so it puts it at $27 out the door a bag usally last me 14-18 days and i feel thats pretty darn good feeding 8 dogs and two of them bigger dogs now for a comparison with the sportmix 24/20 i was feeding the grown beagles about 2 1/2 cups aday the curs about 4 cups so a bag usally lasted me 10-12 days so im actually saving money in the long run and the dogs couldn't look better. sorry this is so long but wanted to make in as informative as possible. thanks for reading guys.

I have been feeding the 24/20 for 5 years now. My hounds do very well on this. I had been paying 28.88 tax included from a farm supply, 50 lb bag. Tractor supply gets the same for 40 lb. The farm supply said he didn`t have deals but if I bought 10 he would throw one in for free. Recently I bought 10 bags for less than 24.00 which included 55 lb bags for the promotional sale from Rogers Feed in Pheltzer SC.
Wouldn`t change. I also understand you should not feed the high fat if you do not run your hounds very much. AS much as I run mine I have not had any adverse reaction.

I've been feeding this same one for about a year now and have no complaints. Seems to be good food.

I guess Ill be the bad guy. I was feeding it and my dogs went down hill FAST when it got cold. I had them at over 4 cups a day. Thats over DOUBLE what i'm feeding now on Purina. The best thing I ever did for my dogs was get them off of it! I thought there was something wrong with the dogs at first but nope it was just the dog food! :bash: :angryfire:

I've only fed the Wholesomes that Sportmix makes , but my dogs have held up well. This last fall I was pounding the guts out of my pack , trying to qualify / getting them ready for the Akc Large Pack Nationals . They never got too thin on me , or run down. I was adding canine red cell to their diet , but that is just a supplement for extreme training ,of which I was doing.
I was training on fox many days as well as cottontails. For those that know anything about running fox , it is intense conditioning for your dogs. Not to mention a blast. Most races on a fox would average around an hour , and at speeds that averaged anywhere from 8-10 miles per hour with a few days that did reach over 11mph for the entire race. I only bring this up , because this food worked very well for me with my training regiment. I however know nothing about the other Sportmix brands.
I almost forgot to mention , I ended up with a 2nd , and Nbq at the Nationals with my 2 big males. I'm convinced it's good food and recommend you give it try.

I've been feeding at least a couple bags per week of Sportmix Wholesomes to my pack of about 25 for the last 2 or 3 years and am very pleased with it. I like the idea of feeding a non-grain based food to hounds, and I get firm, dark stools and not a lot of them. The hounds look good and act like they feel good, and seem to love the food. I generally feed the chicken and rice, but will also use lamb and rice or fish and rice some. All of it costs $29.99 per 40 lbs at Tractor Supply. Dog food is just like everything else in life....you get what you pay for.
