Puppy pricing

Could some one explain the price of puppies to me? I have well bred dogs and am familiar (first hand) with how much a pup goes for, Am I the only person that feels that anything over about 150.00 is to much? It does not matter whether you are talking about FC blood or just registered gundogs, I just looked at beagles for sale online and there are pups that have striker and shaker breeding for 300.00 each please help me out here I cant swallow this.

in my area we get $200 for a well bred akc pup. i have a list of people waiting on pups from me and in turn, when im buying a pup, i think $200 is fine.

Generally around here we get anywhere from 200-250 a pup.

I payed 200 for a pup last year. I also went to the mall just to see what they were getting for a beagle is said half price sale 600

A lot depends on how available the particular bloodline is. Puppies from limited breedings or from proven champions (top and bottom) will easily bring $250+ in most areas.

Out in ID, I had my litters sold before she even had her pups at $250, here I had to almost beg to get $100. It all depends on where you are and what people are willing to pay.

It seems to me like you can't sell a pup for $75 or $100 but you can if you put a $200 tag on the same pup. They think, $100, must not be too good...

as weird as that sounds...when i first got "online" in the beagle world, i advertised a couple nice older running dogs for sale. i think i had them priced at $250 each or something close to that. never got any bites...but i did get an email that said i was too cheap on the prices and if i wanted to sell them quick, i should price them at about $450. well guess what? i did just that and sold those dogs in 4 days for double what i was originally asking. sometimes you cant give people a deal .

BY THE TIME YOU COUNT THE COST OF: PRE-PUP CARE FOR THE MOM, DURING PREG. MOM CARE, MOM POST CARE, PUPPY 1ST. SHOTS, AND SOMETIMES 2ND. SHOTS, EVERY WEEK WORMING OF THE PUPS, AND THE VET BILLS FOR MOM, OR PUPS.
AND EVERYTHING ELSE THAT EVERYONE ELSE HAS SAID, IT DOESN'T TAKE LONG FOR THE BILL TO ADD UP. AND YOU RARELY, OR SHOULD I SAY I RARELY EVER GET OUT WHAT YOU PUT IN. SO 200-300 DOLLARS IS NOT THAT HIGH IF YOU REALLY ADD UP THE COST.

PLUS AS HAS ALREADY BEEN SAID, SOME THING THAT IF YOU ARE TOO LOW, OR TOO CHEAP---THAT THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE PUPS--OR ONE OF THE PARENTS---OR YOU'RE HIDING SOMETHING!!

I TOO HAVE ADVERTISED PUPS FOR 100 OR 200 DOLLARS WITH NO RESPONSE, THEN RE-DO THE AD FOR AS MUCH AS 400 OR 450 AND SOLD EVERY ONE WITHIN A DAY OR TWO.

I think $200 - $250 is a fair price. After raising some pups I am here to tell you that you do not make money on the deal in most occassions. Last year when I bred my queen dog, I had to end up making two trips to Kentucky 370 miles each way to get my female bred. I also had to buy the shots, build a whelping pen, buy puppy food and do other miscellaneous things. I would pay up to $300 for an unstarted pup, if I liked the cross well enough.

I am glad someone has posted this this and not me, so the flames are minimal . I Have only been in beagles 10yr now and have seen the price of pups almost triple . Go back and look at some older Rabbit Hunter magazines and check out stud fees and pup prices I have sold some real well bred pups for only 100 $ and got 200$ out of medicore young started dogs, but in my area ask 200$ for pups, ha ha !!! alot has to do with your location , and what line of hounds you raise. people who are serious into this, trial alot , and expend alot of time and energy will pay more for a hound than just an average guy wanting a dog to run occasionally.
Something I dont understand is why prices have risen so much ? Rabbits arent dangerous game and dog losses from that are negliable unlike, cat,bear, hog dogs. No money in rabbit fur,hide and you gotta kill alot of them to equal the meat off of one small doe. There is no real big money in prizes unlike coon dogs and I am sure a few make money at limited stud fees, but geeze are their straws of Jiggs selling for 5,000$ like Sackket ? you dont even get a good fight like with coyote hounds. Rabbits just arent that tough If someone could tell me why prices have tripled in last 10 yrs please tell me. The dogs that much better ????

I don't see where having say 5 pups in a litter and charging $200.00 which is $1000.00 total that all you'd do is break even. I assume you bred the female to keep a pup or two so you'd still make $600.00 or so giving you had a decent sized litter. You can buy a whole ton of food, shots, and wormer for that. The time with the pups to me and my kids are a bonus not work. I personally sell mine for $100.00 if its a new cross. They are AKC and good bloodlines. Keep what I want and get the rest of pups to the hands of hunters. Keep in touch with the ones you sell to and see how they turn out. If its a good cross that betters your line then I'd say bump the price up. Some dogs produce and some don't. I wouldn't want to sell a friend a $250.00 dud not knowing what I was going to have in a first litter. I personally would have a hard time giving more than $200.00 for a pup.

i think the popularity of beagling has increased greatly in the last 3 - 5 years and that has a lot to do with the prices of beagles going up. when your demand exceeds your supply, the prices will rise accordingly. eventually it will probably even out some, but i dont think the prices nowadays are that bad. whats a good coondog go for these days?... $2000 to $4000 and coonhides sure out worth much here. for a same quality of beagle, you might expect to spend $600 to $800 or i see quite a few priced at $1200 that sell easily enough.

Blackdirt it's not about the coon hides it's the money you can win. These hunts pay very well. A local guy here won $25,000 a few years back and was leading the PKC in points last year don't know if he still is. There is a hunt almost everynight within driving distance around these parts.

to me its all about the fun. $200 for a pup breaks down to about $20 a year over the course of a 10 year old dogs life. most beagles live longer, making it even cheaper. what else can last you 10 years or more and only "cost" you $20 a year but provide you with hundreds (or thousands) of hours of fun?

dont get me wrong, im as tight with my money as anyone, but i figured out a long time ago i'll probably never be the "richest man in the room" so i might as well try and be the one who has the most fun and enjoys life and to me that includes spending a lot of time (and sometimes money) with my beagles.
