back tracking
can and how do you break a hound from this
ED - I don't have an answer for you as I am having the same problem. I have an old dog (she will be 10 in May) that has just started to do this the last couple of years. It seems like it happens when the rabbit holes up she doesn't want to give up and will run the track back to where it started. I also have a 3 1/2 year old dog that is starting to do the same thing. I have shock collars on them but most of the time by the time I figure out what is going on they are already back. Any suggestions anyone has on breaking this would be greatly appreciated. I have a 3 month old pup that I want to get going this summer and I was hoping that the older dogs would help with this but I don't want the pup to pick up their bad habits. Thanks in advance for any advice.

A buddy i run with had a dog that started back tracking & it was hard to tell when he was doing it because the dog also did some excellent track work.If a rabbit doubles back on itself & you aren't paying close attention, you would swear that the dog or dogs are back tracking.Like I said, the dog he had was also a good track hound. He has saved the pack several times when the rabbit would double back on itself. But he started back tracking & it was hard to tell when he was doing it unless we was paying close attention. As far as for correcting the problem, pay real close attention.Try to keep your eye on the rabbit as much as possible, remember the track they had already covered,it also helps to have an honest, straight shootin dog with him.
the female that i have is 1 year old do you think that she will come out of this i run her 3 to 4 times aweek and keep a close eye on her when she does it and when she does i bump her with a shocking collar and she turns back right she only does this when they loose the rabbitt she has only been out about 12 times and shes pretty fast she hunts and runs rough she trys to get the front all the time cutting the other hounds off it seems like but sometimes she runs second or third any info would help
If she is only 1 yr. old & you've only had her out 12 times I would say that there is a chance that she'll come out of it.She's still young yet.You just got to be real careful & make sure that she is back tracking when you buzz her.You never know, she might come out of it in a week or it might be 2 months.I hate to tell anybody what to do with there dogs because I don't pay the feed bill but if she keeps doing it after numerous attempts with the shock collar,I would consider getting rid of her because bad habits will rub off on other hounds after a while but I am a firm believer in always giving them the benefit of the doubt.

thanks guys i will try running her by herself for a while .she hunts real well i hate to get rid of her, but if thats what i have to do i will. but im i firm beleiver in giving a dog a chance, because when you give up on them most of the time thats when they start running right and you wished you had never got rid of her by the way her breeding goes back to fc smokes creek syrus mcgee and ifc maravics blue ninja on top and ftc mikermas super dog and ftc otter brook top dog on bottom.thanks again for your info we will see what happens.
