Looking into buying first Beagle.....

Post by CRHdance »

I am looking to buy a pet for myself. I am a 22 year old student who wants a pet for some company/affection and watchfulness. I'm just looking to ask some questions of someone who has Beagles as pets. I think they are really cute and could be a lot of fun. However, I may be starting medical school soon and will be gone from home for classes. I don't want to get a pup if they are going to be miseralbe and howl anytime I'm gone. That's not fair to them....or potential neighbors. So, I am wondering if the pup were trained so that when the owner is gone, it goes in a crate with blankets/toys it would be ok until I got home. My other question is about housebreaking. I have read that beagles aren't the easiest to train. I do plan on doing obedience school, but again would like to hear from someone with experience. Thank you to anyone who took time to read this long message (sorry!) and is willing to give some advice. Thanks, CRH

Beagles make wonderful pets BUT they do need their excersise. They can be a high energy dog especially when the are young. They can also be quite noisy particularly as pups. I would make two suggestions for your case:
1) Since you are probably not be home for 6+ hours a day wait to get a dog until you are out of school and can spend more time with them.
2) Since you'll probably not listen to suggestion numer 1, find a retired dog to live with you as you won't have as many problems with energy and training.

Training a beagle isn't that difficult, just be consistant and patient.
