Tough decision but if it was mine I would preserve it just like it is. So that means leave in box. But I also have other shot guns to use so not a hard choice for me.

Just my .02.....I would use it...maybe not all the time and only in certain conditions (no rain) but I love to use old guns for their intended purpose.

I recently bought a 1955 16g model 12 (purchased at the local hardware store, original receipt, box, and only shot to test).... I rabbit hunt with it everytime I get a chance....love shooting that gun.

Having said that, I bought it with no intention of selling it...it will be passed down until one of my daughters or their kids feel that the money is more useful.

I hunt with a lot of old guns just for nostalgia of it and I don't need rabbit meat to live...I have been known to carry an original model 37 12g pigtail...though it does make me think twice before pulling the trigger...recoil city and tends to make the meat very tender, minus the shot. :D

Funny thing is some of these new synthetic stocked guns are 2x to 3x the price of a nice classic well made gun....just something to think about, life is short...enjoy what you have while you can. Is it ever going to double or triple in its current value?...maybe, maybe not.

If you do not need to use it, I'd leave in the box as it will be worth more than one used in the field. I've got a Remington Peerless, 12 gauge, over and under new in the box that I have stuck up on a closet shelf that I will probably never put together and I know I will never use it in the field. Been up there for years and I just now thought of it after reading this post.
