Arched loins and hound speed

Re: Arched loins and hound speed
But does the rabbit create the check or the dog? I understand that the rabbit may progressively make it tougher for the hound to follow is he creating checks , or is he just making it tougher on the hound not to check? What about the rabbit that turns off to the side at a 45 and the hound continues on to a loss did the rabbit create the check. If so what about the same rabbit different hound and this hound makes the 45 with the trail? the only difference seems to be the dog and not the rabbit! seeing as how only one dog checked it would appear to be the dog and not the rabbit that created the check! Is one or the other responsible for all of the checks between the two or do both create some of them ?

Pilotknob,
That old man was right. The dogs that I have seen that run to catch and don't swing or skip ahead are not pulling those stunts to get ahead of the pack. Those type of things are done by a slower dog trying to get ahead of the pack the only way it knows how.
A truly fast dog can and does run clean as it wants to catch the rabbit. These type of dogs run well by themselves as most of the time they are running by themselves since they are so far ahead of the pack.
They do not do well in a pack but once they break loose and get the front, its a one dog race.
When I had Queenie, she was what they called a lead dog and was amazing to watch until I ran with a man that had one just as fast that had the same reputation as she did. They both blew up competing with each other and weren't worth a nickel.
I wasn't kidding, most that have one will sell it as they mess up a pack and sure would be bad for a bunch of young dogs.
Same problem with an outstanding jump dog, the other dogs that know it will learn to stand around and watch it waiting for the rabbit to be jumped.
Even stop and think why at a beagle show we proudly hold up the tail? Most beaglers have never thought why.
Knowledgeable judges walk around and look to see if the dog is bred right for the type running in the format its entered in, speed wise, that is! We also hold up the head so the judge can check out the eyes and head set.

Re: Arched loins and hound speed
I guess I am the odd man out here. I dog that never makes a check or never causes a check, probably isn't going to suit me at all. I have had some that stayed tight to the line never reached, could run a rabbit for hours, very few long checks, and barely broke out of a trot when running solo. To me I will tolerate some checks even if they were caused by the dog pushing too hard. A dog that runs with the desire to catch and eat its prey is the kind I like. Running a rabbit smoothly is tops in my book, I am not talking about a hot popper or a dog running half the track. But to me if a dog is coming on the line pushing as hard as the scenting will allow and over runs a 90 degree turn a little ( key word little) not a big deal as long as he gets back quick and recovers the rabbit track. Everybody has different things the like or dislike in a hound, to each his own. I want them to push as hard as the can at all times.

Me too. But when they forget the line and start chasing the other dogs, that is when the train wreck starts and where they have to find a new home.augerhead wrote: I want them to push as hard as the can at all times.

Thanks for the laughs guys. From the loins to the bung hole. Lol
The only time a beagles loins are of concern, is if your a china man , at a market in Bejing , and selecting the main course for dinner. Lol
At a recent trial, this big male stopped after being cast in first series. He proceeded to jack himself up and lay some cable. What a monument. Thick as a mans wrist. Knowing the bung hole rule, the entire gallery watched with anticipation. Sure enough. He tailed the pack on first rabbit jumped , then laid down in the shade and ate grass. Case closed. Must b true. Lol
I think we have it all wrong. The new order /classes at akc are gonna be , 3 cm and under and 3cm - 6cm. Forget the measuring stand. A graduated dowel ,rubber gloves and lubricant. The underhanded measuring committee could forget to use the ky on certain guys hounds they don't like. Definate curse to a good performance.
.
" hey Joe, what you runnin today, I got a 3 and a couple 6 shooters. The one is really a 7. You don't want to be around when that monster goes off. Gonna have to get him an official at a large pack contest. " lol
