Re: Trash proof. hounds
The laziest ones, I dont believe there are trash proof lines of hounds out there I can get any of them to run deer. I believe a so called natural trash proof dog just hasnt had the right opportunity yet and is an accident waiting to happen.I want mine broke so I know we aint gonna have any problems....

I agree with gunslinger except for being lazy. I think it has to do with brains. but I had a lot of pups out of jr's top gun tyke that was naturally deer proof, who was off ranger dan.

Re: Trash proof. hounds
I have had one that was out of Trails and Destiny that never took a deer. I ran a collar on him until the day I got rid of him but he made me nervous because I never zapped him. The guy I sold him to said he tattled on some younger dogs when they took a deer. But that was the only one I ever owned and I hated it

I think genetics plays a role, because I've seen a certain branch of a bloodline that were real bad for breaking off of trash. One male I had I could never really trust.

I love my hounds, but I don't trust them. I always run a collar and pay attention to what's going on.

Beagles are born to chase. Period... Its up to us to teach them what we want them to pursue. Now, ive heard a lot of different reasons people think dogs run off game (breeding, personality, situation, etc) but personally i'll never know the true reason why until that dog looks at me and says "I just felt like it"!
Re: Trash proof. hounds
Mike Yates told me he never broke a hound from deer. If a hound would rather run deer, he had three deer camps around him that would give a $100. for every one he could supply. He never got a deer proof line in over 30 years of breeding this way but was able to get a high percentage of hounds that cared little or were easily corrected.
I think we breed for tendency an percentages first and then work towards total overall improvement as with any trait we choose to promote and fix within our line. There is never a completion of the task and constant vigil must be kept to retain any gains as neglect or lax in standard will allow regression to creep out and your dragged back toward the average.
I've got a little male now who's ignoring the deer and I think the biggest contributor is he's been eating rabbits. I think the taste he's acquired from catching the little half growns have "set" him on the path to a straight rabbit hound. Now who's to say when the food supply runs low he won't revert to offgame? but right now, his taste and olfactory are set to rabbits... "keeping fingers crossed"

Re: Trash proof. hounds
I DO NOT believe that blood line has anything to do with. two of my best hounds I had both loved deer and took ALOT of work to break them but once broke no more issues. Bred them and four of the litter never ran a deer go figure:?
I think alot of it has to do with what they are ran with when young if you have deer races on occassion they learn it from others fast. I will say I have only had 2 that never ran deer and one was not my breeding . I exspect them all to run a deer but I am very pleased when they dont. I think it may be better it they are broke that way if ever around runners they know not to do it. instead of being sucked in due to a good beagles desire to run with the pack.

Feed them road bunnies (finds rabbits on lease roads and let them run them until they can run fluently) and them start letting them jump rabbits haven't had to break one of jumping deer since but if u just let them hunt on their own they are Goin to jump anything but rabbit because rabbits are harder to run than any other animal just my .02 cents
Re: Trash proof. hounds
I believe a smart hound that has accomplished catching a rabbit or tasting the kill can become somewhat "set" on that game.
I personally know of one bitch that was taken off a farm never having had any "formal teaching", that was a straight rabbit dawg never hunted only left loose to do what came naturally that becoming a FC and kennel foundation. She may have ran deer when young but was never broke from it unless she gave it up on her own.
I do believe the company young hounds keep influence their tendencies and development...ie...deer runners will get you more deer runners.
I do believe what Randall said, "what's born in the bone can't be whipped out through the flesh", "the more we take on against nature, the more we create a job never finished."
It's like breeding 15" hounds hoping the majority of offspring will result being 13" hounds. You may get some but how much better the odds if the pedigree is stacked with 13" hounds.
I think ole Kate ran loose on the farm and never caught a deer but she did catch a few rabbits. She learned the vanity of wasted energy on chasing deer vrs the reward of sticking to a twisting rabbit that concluded sometimes in a meal. She learned to focus and remain true on what was in her nature and rewarded her effort. I think that nature and tendency to focus when being trained are key to having straight hounds by what's in them vers. force broke.
My opinion comes from before the electronic age where hounds had to be chased down on foot to be corrected. The old "three strikes your out" was easier to uphold when shoe leather was the price paid, wasted time and other young hounds lead astray. Biddable tractable characteristics were also more of a natural inclusion, the natural "want to please" vers force broke to fear and respect command . What can we realistically expect from the future when everything that should come naturally in a hound is being "force broke" into the hounds we hunt today.
I think we create a big bucket list for our future young hunters, money and time getting to where what should be more natural and enjoyable. jmho

Re: Trash proof. hounds
So if I let my beagles blood a few young rabbits, will that be a good thing to do or will it make them hunt for themselves and not for me? Now if it would cause them to not to want to run a deer I am all for it.S.R.Patch wrote:I believe a smart hound that has accomplished catching a rabbit or tasting the kill can become somewhat "set" on that game. jmho

Re: Trash proof. hounds
Hounddog feeds his dogs deer all fall and winter. He has less deer races per year than I do. I dont think what they eat makes any difference at all. If it did Jim would never be able to run a rabbit.

Re: Trash proof. hounds
So .........if what a dog eats helps determine what it chases does that mean the guys who feed raw have trouble with their dogs chasing chickens and cows?
At times I can almost imagine how dogs must laugh at the species human for the things that we fancy are true about what a dog understands!
I learned a long time ago to always suspect that a hound will sooner or later run trash. It's up to me to teach my hounds not to. Life with hounds has been simpler for me ever since
