One good memory, years ago, only one beagle on the chase, after the 2nd circle the rabbit just disappeared. There was a little pond, maybe 20/25 ft , and 1 or 2 ft deep, in the middle was a clump of cattails, sure as sh$$t, rabbit swam to middle of pond, to hang tight on cattsil island. Dog wouldnt go in the water, either did we, dam rabbit just layed out and sun himself.

Had dogs pounding rabbit for about 45 mins watched it come across a yard and jump up into a broken window of an abandoned garage. All the dogs circled building my old dog jumped up thru the window never did get rabbit out of there. He def had a plan. Was neat to watch for sure.

Soloing my dog on public land. Power opening then edge of woods totally choked by grape vines except a small area where state had cut down a half dozen or so dead ash trees which knocked down the vines . Dog took a rabbit from the power opening into woods. I climbed high up a downed ash tree and had a good view of the small opening. Here comes the rabbit right under me, runs to ash tree to my left, jumps up on the trunk runs the 40 foot length and jumps as far as it can to the ground and takes off. My dog's about 20 seconds behind. I want my dog to jump on the tree and follow the complete line but noooo. She gets to the tree gets her nose to where the rabbit got up on it, and then beats foot on the ground the 40 feet to the end of the tree finds the track and that quick is back on it. Next circle about 10 minutes later here they come. Rabbit runs to different downed ash tree in front of me, jumps up, runs the length jumps down and takes off. Dog still close on it gets to tree doesn't bother to get up on top of it just runs on ground to end of tree finds track and back on it. Now I'm thinkin my dog has had this lesson before I just didn't witness it but she learned from it.BCBeagles wrote:Climb up on a downed tree, a large, long tree, and run the whole length of it....then jump off at a 90 degree to it...lol.
This tree went up to about 4-5 off the ground...it was puzzling for the dogs but fun to watch!

Re: 1st Hand experiences you've seen a rabbit pull
Ive seen em run up down trees and use water etc.
One of the best tricks I seen a rabbit pull was a rabbit runnin down a fence line and start zig zagging thru it every 10-20 yards or so. it makes for an interesting run if your dog likes to run the line.

Re: 1st Hand experiences you've seen a rabbit pull
About 10 yr ago up on Drummond we hit a pod of hare. It had me scratching my head for a while till I seen what was happening. There were three young hare doing a Indian run in front of the hounds. The hounds would all start out together on the line then, go over the rise and split different ways. Eventually they would come back close all joining together again then, back over the rise and split again. Once I moved in on the trail they were using, I saw them all three coming down the same trail, one say 10 yards behind the other. I ran up on the rise to see hounds coming on and then, a split would occur.
Those bunnies were having a fun time leading the hounds figure eights. After some time and a few shots by the gang, it was found they were all nice young hare ,cause dinner that night was tender with biscuits smothered in gravy... yum yum
I told Steve and Marshal the reason they probably kept all three going was, we didn't run our hounds together that often so each little pack of 3 were not that unified at keeping together so they split into the own little family pack and took their hare. The youngster hare probably were all of the same litter I'm guessing.

Re: 1st Hand experiences you've seen a rabbit pull
My hunting buddy and I were hunting. The dogs jumped a rabbit which headed for the top of the mountain. We waited and there was a check. In a few minutes one opened and the race was on back down the mountain side. I saw the rabbit as it crossed a creek on a long log. It ran about seventy five feet then doubled, ran back on top of its tracks, crossed back on the log, ran about fifty feet, then jumped to one side where it ran a few feet and squatted. The dogs came down the side of the mountain and never slacked up as they crossed the creek on the log. They ran to the end of the line and lost. After a few minutes of searching I told my buddy that that rabbit deserves to live and reproduce. Lets find another one.

O Boy, telling my age back in the 70's around Fort Jackson off Sreaming Eagle road I had a buddy who's parents owned a little shack down a dirt rd that was next to a drain that ran into the Wateree river basin. There were some of those big swampers that would take a beagle out of hearing before it would circle back. I had a little beagle I carried everywhere I went when headed to the country . One morning she jumped a big swamper that took her out of hearing and about 30 minutes later I heard her coming back down the middle of the branch. I was stand on the dirt road on a culvert pipe thinking the rabbit would come down one side or the other. I could see her about a hundred yards up the branch hopping from root to root coming down the branch I backed off the edge of the road thinking the rabbit would leave the water to cross the road. Boy was I wrong when I seen him pop out the other side of the culvert still swimming. So as the rabbit made his exit I ended the race and let my little hound taste the rewards of a job well done.
