I remember reading an article Frank Reese wrote Several years ago ,

He was talking about A Dog Named ,,Gay Baker,,Frank ,said you can't out run him and ,you can't run him out.

I have have a great deal of Respect for Mr Reese,he was one of the best Houndsmen ever ,in my opinion,,His purpose was to better the Bred as a whole,,,,,and That is the Difference,,,

There are Rabbit Hunters,,Field Trailers,And people who Bred Beagles, and some who just like Beagles,,listening to them Run Etc.

Then there are Houndsmen ,,

All that said There has never been A hound that could not be Out Run,,or,,could Not Be Run Out,,,,It's just harder to do in A Very few Cases.

If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered

FC Green Bay Wiley, hands down. Wiley had incredible speed very few checks, exciting chop mouth like she knew she was gaining ground on it, in which she was. She could literally lap a pack of dogs. I saw it on several occasions. Hare or cottontail didn't matter the dog was amazing to watch. Wiley grew stronger and more dominate as the trial went on.

Only hole that dog had was that she wouldn't run in her heat cycle. Otherwise that dog was the measuring stick that will never be matched.

Very true Bernard Mulinex Mt State told me a story where he was watching from on the top of this ridge down in the bottom near the ohio river Wiley left the pack so bad on cottomtail the judges were (unaware i hope) She only placed but clearily was the winner. After the trial he called joe kuklenski trying to buy her offred like $3000 for her. Bernard was really poed about her not winning. Bernard said it wasnt close he could see 90% he says of the race looking down form his vantage point.Bernard was no bser if he said it you could take it to the bank.

I saw Hill's Shakerag Jerry Lee win the North American championship on three legs. Lost a leg due to an accident with a barbed wire fence. A hound like that deserves mention for sure. He could get it done.

I judged that trial with Scott Music. Wiley looked great ; super fast; got her share of the checks, but in our view deserved & placed 3rd behind FC Alisha's Rabbit Running Mollie & FC GMC's Primetime Peeka-Boo. I remember that trial very well because the running was so great in the winners pack. I do remember Wiley hitting a burst of speed a couple of times in front of the gallery & led the pack up into the woods out of sight. When we got up there the pack was broke down & Mollie went back and found the check where the pack had overran the turn. This is just one example of about 2 hours or more of action. I don't want to take anything from Wiley's legacy because she was truly a great hound ; definitely the fastest of foot we had that day & I could see how she could be unbeatable on hare, but Mollie was the hound that day that was our clear winner. She got at least 70 % of the checks; 2nd & 3rd place was a toss up between Wiley & Peeka. We ran another rabbit just to try to determine those two; we already had Mollie winning. Peeka outscored all three on the last rabbit , so we gave her second place. Scott & I had no disagreements about any of the hounds that day. Mr. Mulinex is a beagle legend in my mind & I'm sure he believed what he said, but this was my view as the judge on that particular field trial.

Greg no disrespect but you were not judging this trial-different as Peeka won it. Bernard told me who was-wont say wont bash anyone on here. I have seen both dogs run at least twice Wiley in my opinion was the better dog a lot cleaner with her mouth. My self and Al Slocum observed Peeka lay a long line twice we had been in the same place over 30 minutes, and on checks she appeared to make a check when nothing had been there nothing else barked been standing there long time no line at all. It was good enough to fool the judges other people saw it as they picked up dogs not honoring her that were not fooled. It was a mistake I hope by the judges. Maybe she had not been ran up a buddy of mine had bought her, or she might just went out of heat? Any way she won should been picked up pretty bad .The judge who was also a friend of mine and her new owner I politely told them after the trial what I saw that maybe she needed running. Peeka was sent to my firend Mike Mcpherson to be ran up to try become an IFC. I was told she never placed in Canada. Her new owner was at the NLPC she did not place (maybe he did not enter her)however his other bitch did place IFC GreenbayWiley took second in the snow behind Mcphersons Huntem Up Magnum Susie.I watched the entire trial but maybe 30 minutes Susie and Wiley were fantastic. Aaron did not exaggerate nor Bernard about the the exceptionalist of Wiley I saw it myself. Shame she died young, and I can see why Bernard tried buying her after seeing her run in snowy conditions for about 7 hours of running swapping back and forth on checks and drives with Susie. I was told by Vic Cronin Speedy Sports owner Susie was one the best snow hounds to ever run in new york fantastic gun hound too. Bernard told me this and I think Lowell Smith and Jim Hall were told too that Wiley was the best running rabbit dog he had ever seen.Offered Joe K thousandsss after the dominant display she put on. Again no disrespect.

Frank lived 15 miles away from us .He was a good salesman, and he actually was a writer for the hunters horn magazine(fox hounds) being we lived nearby my grandfather ran with numerous times. We had dogs from him.The best hounds we found that were less trashey and truer with their mouth came from the Fish Creek lines. My grandfather bought the first fish creek blood to NC was a friend with Fish Creek Jones as well.
No disrespect to Gay Baker he never won a trial that I know of and was beaten by other hounds of other lines.Of course Frank was making a lot of money on pups and stud fees and would not tell you that.Other than a short stint back in the 70's there were several FC's from his line in the south in thicker cover where its hard to see.He was a salesman and good at blowing his own horn being a writer sold lot pups all around. My grandfather said he took his fish creek hounds to run with him, and Franks face turned red that it was a warm day and some of his dogs ran out of gas come out to lay in small branch to cool off after his hounds got whipped on their home running grounds.. My grandfather sold all his Gay stuff for that reason and being trashey .He said Gay Dash was a back tracker. Any ways you dont see his blood doing much these days if anything. You see lot of dogs still tracing back to fish creek though.I will give him credit for not running in the 60's brace trials or feeding that peanut rolling line of hounds. Gay hounds and i seen lotss of them are not the best nor the worst and can work with out crosses. Baker was not the legend he was made to be just in his back yard. Certain lines you see being bred decades and there's a reason for that. Unless you compete your hounds or run with the best around and hunt with other hounds you have no true measuring stick. It's better to see for yourself than believe certain things. I have over the last few decades went and run with dogs getting the notoriety hop in the truck drive 17 to 18 hours to see.Sometimes you see there the real deal sometimes you dont wont insult their owner and just keep quiet and scratch your head. I will say this and be a fact not all cottontaill dogs make good hare hounds, and not all hare hounds make good cottontail hounds. The great ones do it both ways

No offense taken. I sold Peeka as a weaned pup & only got to see her run three or four times. She showed extra mouth the first time I saw her at about 1 yr old. She didn't do much in trials until Dwight Mahaffey & Chad Peercy bought her. I think she had about 10 wins so they must have had figured something out. I think she was a dog that had to be ran hard; Mahaffey could tell you. I saw her twice when she looked like a million dollars; saw her completely destroy a pack at Jessamine . When she won Southern West Virginia, I watched all but 2 hounds get picked up for extreme cold trailing on a heavy frost in the first series pack. Peeka & I think it was Jason Shag's Zena dog were the only two that didn't cold trail. In fact Peeka totally left the others that were cold trailing & went hunting on her own; safe to say Peercy had her tuned in at that time. She ended up winning the trial, but I didn't get to see the winners pack. I saw Wiley run three times & she looked great at the trials I talked about & the other time she was in heat & just wasn't herself. I judged Mollie several times. They were in my mind as good as any 13" females I ever saw run; & just happened to run at the same time in history. Mollie was slightly better than both as a whole in my opinion, but remember Wiley was coming half way across the country to run in their type of terrain when I saw them run head to head.
