Re: Minimum Wage
"As a poverty program, raising the minimum wage is like killing flies with a shotgun, not very well targeted. About 60% of the officially poor don’t work, so the only thing raising the minimum wage does for them is to make it harder for them to get a job if they ever decide they want one. Workers must bring at least as much value to the firm as they are paid or the firm will fail and all jobs will be lost (no GM bailouts are available to our 6 million small employers that employ half of our private sector workforce). Raising the minimum wage raises the hurdle a worker must cross to justify being hired.Pine Mt Beagles wrote:Why are Republicans ,,against it.
It is estimated that less than 15% of the total increase in wages resulting from an increase in the minimum will go to people below the poverty line and less than a third of those receiving the minimum wage are families below the poverty line. Most minimum wage workers are from above median income families. So, most of the people benefiting from the minimum wage are not the intended targets of the “anti-poverty” aspect of raising the minimum wage."
In essence is doesn't resolve the situation. There is a balance between the cost of labor and profitability. While it wouldn't effect those in the middle class as badly, the inflation that came about would, at the very least, neutralize any increase in the minimum wage. If we could raise the minimum wage while preventing inflation then you would be on to something. Unfortunately it doesn't work like that regardless what party is in office as it is a matter of economics not policy. Here's an example with numbers:
"Consider a community based pizza parlor selling 100 pies a day for 360 days at $10 each. Total revenue is $360,000. It employs 10 minimum wage workers earning $7 per hour, working 2000 hours a year, making labor costs $140,000. Assume rent, utilities, equipment, depreciation, insurance, supplies, licenses, and food costs come to $170,000 per year, leaving a profit of $50,000 for the owner and his/her family. Raising the minimum wage $1 would raise labor costs by $20,000 (paying more for the same amount of labor) and reduce profit to $30,000. The owner must either move into a smaller house or raise prices, which reduces the demand for pizza, resulting in the loss of a worker. So, the full increase in the wage cost of an increase in the minimum wage comes out of the pockets of customers or the owner’s family, and the one person who loses a job. There was no net gain in income to increase spending in the community served as every dollar the minimum wage workers received came out of someone else’s pocket in the community."
I guess I feel that it's treating a symptom instead of resolving the issue.

Re: Minimum Wage
Lets look at it in a different way.
Wal Marts,,pays just enough to buy,gas to get back and forth to work,,,,but ,,,if minimum wage passed they will have to pay Wal Mart employees enough to make it,,,,with out help from food stamps ,and other entitlements,so Wal Mart will finally be paying what they should hve been paying the last few decades.
Just lime the top ten food chains ,who pay a fraction of what they should pay,,,they should be paying 12 or 15 bucks an hour ,to help with entitlements ,employees will eat better,
And cut entitlement programs drastically.
There is simply no down side to a good minimum wage, ,,these companies are making double record profits,it's Time to catch the employees pay to the times.
And there are other cmpanies who are making record profits but don't want to pass it on down to employees.
So what is the problem .

Re: Minimum Wage
Higher wages equal higher prices. Costs will move more than income. It did every other time minimum wage went up. When minimum wage goes up everyone else takes a pay cut. The percentage won't equal out across the board.
Drop the minimum wage. Bet you see the cost of living go down.

Re: Minimum Wage
YOU JUST CAN'T FIX STUPID, PMB you just completely missed Pine Lakes explanation which is right on target. Simply put you raise minimum wages, cost go up, employess get laid offf and now guess what they are completely taken care of by the tax payer thus no reduction in entitlements. More than likely entitlements increase because of cost increases on products and more unemployed. You just aren't smart enough to comprehend reality. Exactly right 2500!

Gasoline prices and rent will go up and more Mexicans will move Nortrh.

And cut entitlement programs drastically. During the booming years of Reagan, Clinton, and Bush, did entitlements decrease?
There is simply no down side to a good minimum wage, ,,these companies are making double record profits,it's Time to catch the employees pay to the times. If they are making those huge profits, why is Obama still investing tax payers money in large companies?.
With Obama and Bidens record, you would not let either of them walk your Pine Mountain beagles. You know they would sell it and charge you dog sitting minimum wage for the time.

Name some of those companies that are making huge profits on American workers.
So what is the problem .
PM, do you believe raising minimum wage will put America's youth, in particular African American youth back to work? I mention African American because that is the group that has been negatively affected most by Obama's policies.
Re: Minimum Wage
WASHINGTON — The nation’s governors emerged from a meeting with President Barack Obama on Monday claiming harmony, only to immediately break into an on-camera partisan feud in front of the West Wing.
Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal lashed out first, saying if Obama were serious about growing the economy he would approve the Keystone XL pipeline project and take other executive actions.
Instead, Jindal said, Obama “seems to be waving the white flag of surrender” on the economy by focusing on raising the federal minimum wage to $10.10, up from $7.25. “The Obama economy is now the minimum wage economy. I think we can do better than that,” Jindal said.
Obama: We will have less jobs but they will be higher paying jobs, ten dollars an hour.

Re: Minimum Wage
Newt read your last paragragh of your 9:36 post and think about it. This is also the group whole heartedly supporting Obama. I use to believe that like me people born in poverty really wanted the oppertunity to get out. It is not only blacks, its whites, latino's and so on. If those people actually wanted oppertunity why would entitlements be the key to the elections, free healthcare, free birth control, tax payer funded abortion and so on. Why would this war on women have been pushed so hard. Most people like PMB don't like reality because it forces them to face the truth, the real reason things are the way they are and why they are getting worse. 1 out of 4 white babies being born to a single parent, 2 out every 4 latino babies being born to a single parent, 3 out of 4 black babies being born to a single parent. Self resposibility, morality, honor, values, principles and so on are disappearing rapidly in this society. Minimum wage jobs are not career jobs unless you have not challenged yourself to gain a skill of some sort that make you a marketable commodity. THE TRUTH HURTS!

Re: Minimum Wage
In Alabama a person on welfare gets almost 24,000 a year per person and other states pay far more.
They get less each if they are married so it cost a lot to be married. Better and smarter to live together and have illegitimate children that have no daddy as the children then get more each.
Plus money for dependent children, free housing, school lunches, medical, etc.
They loose all that if they work so the minimum wage will never be enough to beat being unimployed and on "checks".
Classee are held all around us teaching how to get all possible from the system.

Re: Minimum Wage
John that is exactly what I was saying. Those people no longer are looking for an oppertunity to be productive, just the next handout. If anyone points this out they are called racist, biggots and so on. I no longer believe the majority in poverty want an oppertunity to get out, I think they just want those of us who have busted our azzes to make something of ourselves to take care of them toooooooooooooooo.

But you are right the cost of living goes down.
I APPOLOGIZE FOR USING ALL CAPS,,BUT,THE CATARACS ARE GETTING WORSE ,KINDA LIKE REPUBLICAN ,BLINDERS.LOL
SO
WE DONT RAISE THE MINIMUM WAGE ,SO THAT THESE BIG CORPORATIONS HAS TO PAY A FAIR WAGE ,WE EVEN CUT THE MINIMUM WAGE ,
THESE BIG CORPORATIONS ARE MAKING RECORD PROFITS,BUT ,ARE UNWILLING TO PASS ANY OF THIS MONEY,TO EMPLOYEES WHO ARE MAKING THESE PROFITS FOR THEM,
THESE CORPORATIONS GET SUBSIDIES FROM THE GOVERNMENT,ON TOP OF ALREADY SKY ROCKETING PROFITS,AND PEOPLE DONT SEE THE GAP BETWEEN THE ELITE IN THE MIDDLE CLASS GETTING WIDER.
AMERICA ,SIMPLY CANNOT AFFORD TO CONTINUE ENTITLEMENTS ,TO ,EMPLOYEES OF THESE BIG CORPORATIONS ,,BECAUSE THEY THEY REFUSE TO PAY A LIVABLE WAGE,,,WAL MARTS AND THE TOP TEN CHAIN RETAURANTS COST TAX PAYERS MILLIONS EVERY YEAR IN ENTITLEMENTS BECAUSE OF THIS THEN ADD THE SUBSIDES SOME OF THEM GET AND IT COST EVEN MORE.IT IS EASY TO MAKE A PROFIT IN BUSINESS IF TAX PAYERS PAY EMPLOYEE WAGES OR YOU.

PMB you might not appear soooooooooooooooo silly if only you could show proof of all your claims.
Re: Minimum Wage
Question. Is $10.10 the magic number to put ones income just above the poverty level set in the affordable health care act to make an individual not qualify for insurance subsidies. I would say yes with the goal to increase new tax revenue. Has nothing to do with making someone a livable wage because they will be more broke than they are now. Looks like they will be forced to buy the bronze plan which has basically no health coverage at all until the ultra high deductible is met. How else the magic number be $10.10.
