Winter...

Post by mybeagles »

18" of powdery snow and temps dipping below zero every night have me fed up with winter. Perhaps if I had dogs that could drive in this it would be different story line, but I don't. I have one that can walk a track. If you push them any harder they go right to hole.

Walked 4 hours in 18" snow....jumped 5, longest race 100 yards.... Every muscle in my body hurts.

Seems like it's been long winter, is anyone else ready for SPRING!

I'll try my dogs on hare on Monday, can't be any worse than these cottontail holers...

With a foot plus here in North Central WV. I have only been getting pups in the yard to exercise. Waiting for some snow to melt off. I would go in 4-6 inches, but this is extreme for us and rabbits just will not run, they will sit right by a hole.

They aren't stupid.....lol. Ready to see some grass!!!!

We have 24-36" on the ground, depending on cover type. Rabbits jumped from big brush piles go right back in after just a few feet. Tough going, even with snow shoes. I'm ready for spring and have been for weeks. Worst winter we've had in several years,

Michigan weather's been brutal I have been out three times. Last week drove 850 miles round-trip. Just so I could hunt a day and a half.

Our winter has been bad too. If it isn't the below zero temps, it's the ice that's been our ordeal. I can deal with the cold air and snow but I can't stand the ice.

Only thing I dislike about spring is what comes after it. Looks like we will see some 60s for the next few days. Warm enough for me.
If I agreed with you then we'd both be wrong.

dave I feel ya for sure brother :D over 2 feet of snow here , only got hare here that don't go to ground still can't keep much of a race going :( it is going to warm up here a lot this week ,should improve scenting conditions ,but with the warmer temperature brings more snow ,only can hope it gets warm enough to settle current snow depth . for sure puts a perspective on what you are currently feeding ,that's if you can take the blinders off. :D

The best part of having so many 0 degree nights is that it will kill off some of our new arrivals.
TICKS !!

The deep snow is miserable because I can't get to my running spots back in on the seasonal roads.
Might have to invest in a snow machine with a dog box?

Or a time share in swamper country!

Last 3 weeks the snow has been so deep (18-24 inches) my old dog wont go through it. I lost my cold nose snow dog about a month ago now my only hope for any good hunting is when things begin to thaw out. Even then I dont know if the old boy has it in him to do much. Max dying and all this snow and cold has realy messed up the rest of my hunting season :( . I was on pace for 100 rabbits now I dont see it happening this year. I am tired of the deep snow and single didgit temps for sure. :bash:

Lol.... My boys set target of 100 too, their stuck on 42 and lack the motivation to go out in deep snow to rabbit hunt. They been going to Mt. Holly to snow board....
