What I have experienced is that squirrels, possum, coon etc will also chew up the boards most generally between them to make holes big enough to escape therefore leaving enough room for rabbits to get out as well. I started lining my pyramid traps with chicken wire which has seemed to stop that. It might be because the space between the boards is small enough that they would have to chew the wire and the boards to make a hole big enough to get out of, I don't know but doing so has seemed to help. I have had more chewing problems with squirrels than anything else in the pyramid traps. The trigger is a figure four, deadfall type trigger made from three separate pieces.

Hey Beaglers
I've never tried the pyramid trap, so I'm not down grading them at all, but I will tell you the best rabbit trap I have ever used is the Cheese Wheel trap. It's considered a warm weather trap but I have caught rabbits year round since I made my first one. The plans can be found on the Griffin & sons website on 100 Top Beagle Sites, I think..... Somewhere there is a video on exactly how to make it.
Good Luck! WTV

Iron Jaw, Wier Creek Kennels website used to have step by step directions on how to build them but something is up with the website. I don't have a picture but they are just like the ones on Griffin and Sons Kennels but the cheese wheel is round instead of octagonal. The bottom is 25" round, top is 23" round, wire is 8" tall and I use 1/2" pvc instead of all thread (makes it lighter and slides faster) and I use squirrel cage wire (hardware cloth), but you can use rabbit (1x1) wire.
Hope this helps!!!
