Example- blue collar got strike and a check=35pts. 5 min left in cast white collar who hasn't done squat the whole cast steps on a rabbit, judge sees it, BOOM 40 pts for jump/strike. Hour time runs out, you just got beat by 5 pts even though your dog was dominate in cast. Judging in LP is a hard job! They run there ass of to make sure the best hound wins of that hour. I applaud them.

To me that's what few of y'all are referring to loop holes?
But the way I understand, by the way it sounds akc also as them too?

Example- following a particular judge around cause he prefers your hound style of running over another. Somebody stated AKC gives a seminar class to judge. Well that fine and a good thing, because I believe for trialling a judge should show some kind of proof for being capable of judging a cast of hounds, BUT what if judge I get prefers smooth hounds and mine is rougher than crap? Or vice versa? I'm not following one judge like a lost puppy!

When I first started running LP, they told me that LP was form for the rabbit hunter. That was reason for scoring jump/strikes, jumps, checks, and strikes. Best hound of the hour cast wins.
Akc has scoring but based on judge discretion.

Guys I got knews for ya!! You know why me are back and forth with the two???
Is because we all love to run those hounds. Ya, everybody wants a LPGRCH, or FC, but we wouldn't keep going back if we didn't love watching and running them dogs.

On another note! I ran in a PKC beagle trial other day. NOW that's a different breed of format. I enjoyed running in it but, the set rules need some fine tuning.

If you are saying judging Little Pack is HARDER than AKC then YOU HAVE NO CLUE!!!! Run for maybe a hour if there is running in Little Pack, AKC you gonna be out there for normally no less than 3-4 hours but normally running from 8am'ish to 4pm'ish don't wanna hear how hard it is to judge little pack for a hour.
Yeah, those horses looked wore out at the end of the day

east80kennels wrote:how does everyone feel about the two different divisions, akc vs lp. are the 2 formats that much different, as far as judging, scoring. is it that the 2 are much more different from each other, is it the judging or the dogs or what. how much does each division really look at stuff like hunt ect... ect....

This is just my opinion of the two formats

All i can say about judges is that their is good n bad honest n crooked
In both formats
More good than bad forsure though
And as long as they r judging it means that i dont have to
So go judges!!

Akc- good
1.i feel that they promote way the more
Sensable rabbit dog .
2. seems to be a more professional group.
3.Seems to always have rabbits and plenty of them at their trials
4.Seem to be more appreciative of there trial members n federations
5.One pack at a time goes to the field so u can always take multiple dogs and dont have to
Worry about finding a handler.
6. Like the fact that there is no time limit
So u dont have to pick the hardest hunting dog to win if u dont have a rabbit in a hr like lil pack does
7.They have a derby class

Lil pack- good
1.Really like the no alcohol no cussing rules
2.judges r picked at the hunt and drawed out n placed with a pack of dogs
3.Lil pack has no tolerance for off game
4.Lil pack has more clubs and more hunts than akc

Akc - bad

1. Ive seen alcohol being drunk at the hunts
2. your dog may not get picked up in the field and and u have to wait
Till all the other dogs go out and then u go back to the clubhouse to find out
If u have made it to the next series and if u didnt make it
Then u have waited around for nothing

Lil pack-bad
1.Limited to 1 hr in the field
2.A dog can win a hunt and never give a bark
3.A dog can jump a rabbit and get out run for a hour and if there is no 15 second break down
Then the dog that controlled the race never gets a point.
4.Field trials are based on alot of luck but lil pack trials are
the most luck based program there is.
6. 15 second check is to long

I like and run both formats
But to me akc is where the big boys play
Ill put it this way.. If i had a dog that run with authority that was a true line running hard hittin track driving hound that can run with out having a big long 15 second lose then id run him akc
And if i had a half way decent to good maybe even great dog that would cause alot of 15 second looses
And really wasnt akc quality and i really wanted to trial him then id run lil pack
If nothing else just because he might get lucky in lil pack and win one
I have seen some absolute powerhouse n lil pack over the years
Ive seen some that have dominated lil pack and could have dominated akc
But was never trialed akc
Then ive seen some powerhouse lil pack dogs that wouldnt last 5 minutes in a akc trial
And also u can take a lil pack world champion to a lil pack club hunt and get beat by a lil turd that can barely run a rabbit
Just to much room in lil pack for a average dog to get lucky and beat a good dog out

Im trying to give a good fair honest opinion of the two
But akc is where its at!!!
Ive watched n trialed n both
Neither one is perfect i could give more plus's and downfalls to both formats than i did but
If im serious about a dog he will be trialed akc Midwest

Reggie made IFC and won the world hunt. Switch made FC and won the world hunt. So how did these smooth running AKC dogs win the NKC world hunt. Because no matter what format a judge that knows a rabbit dog will bring back the best dog. That why these 2 dogs blood is in my kennel. And always will be. Let's stop fussing about which format is best or worst. Let's run dogs. I'm available Sunday evening at the local briar patch.

I do take AKC serious and I will defend if just like some are defending ARHA, I have had a few bad experiences with LITTLE PACK but kept going until I saw what format was best in my eyes and promoted the best dogs in my opinion. Yes AKC is the Big Leagues and Little Pack is the Minors in my opinion a Little Pack Champion in my eyes doesn't mean much to me, Yes I have a LPRCH but didn't travel around the world to chase it. Yes some clubs ride horses to judge on but most clubs judges are on foot. I invite all of you that don't know much about AKC or have heard bad about it to come out and check a hunt out, put your dog in it hopefully they will do well but don't get on here bashing judges saying you didn't get a fair shake because your a little pack guy and they didn't know you!!!! I've said all I'm gonna say on AKC vs LITTLE PACK to me the winner is clear cut.

Give it a few more years & the only "KC" that'll matter much will be PKC anyway. Ask anyone who has hunted competition coon hounds very long. 20 years ago nobody really heard of PKC, now they dominate the coon dog world. They have been wading into the beagle pool instead of jumping in like they did in the coon dog world but they are putting more into their beagle program every year. When they pull the trigger they'll do the same with beagle trials. They have some modifying to do but that's where they excell is adapting to what folks want in an event. You tell me what you'd rather do, go to Booneville to try to win a dusty trophy or travel to where ever & compete for a truck? I can't wait till they pull the trigger, that's when I'll get into trialing seriously.

From my experiences running different formats ukc pp promotes a dog that The akc rules want. I really like what they look for in ukc pp. I haven't seen a difference between lp dogs and akc dogs. Just my opinion

Mr. Schelling, I believe you casted the first stone about judges. If I recall you put in bold letters "LP judges have a hard job" and also I have no clue after I even stated I've not yet run in a akc trial. I only stated what I did know and heard. I did NOT say anything direct about any Akc judges, besides the hounds are at the judges discretion wether like smooth, rough, etc.
For that matter, in what format are the hounds not at judges discretion?
I applaud you for sticking up for your akc hounds as I would. There is one thing? The challenge of championing a hound out in LP is not as easy as one thinks. There is lot of time, travel, money invovled. I've seen dogs do it in 4 trials and I've seen dogs of same caliber do it in 20 trials. I hope to run in a akc trial at some point in time, and I hope you get to judge my cast because I can tell you have a passion for the akc trialling circuit and I know they would get a fair chase.

BTW. I got 2 questions....
1- would there be a chance you wanna sale your LPRCH?
2- if my LP dogs have FCs in there ped, does that make my dog like 1/8 field champion?

LOL!!! I just funning!!!

We can only hope.

The knowledgeable beaglers that have responded have said the same thing--the formats are different but the best dogs can rise to the top in AKC and ARHA. Trying to bash one format or prove one better than the other does a disservice to us all. Putting down either format doesn't help anyone. All of us need to work together to promote all types of beagle field trials. If you don't like a certain kind of trial, don't go to their events. But beaglers need to work together to keep all formats successful. That is what will lead to improving the breed many years down the road.
