Dogs being attacked!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to know if anyone knows of any beagles being attacked by Coyotes or Wolves in Michigan. We were in the U.P. this weekend and there were coyote tracks up the kazoo!

Have never had them attacked... Have heard a lot of stories about it here in MI though. I have had several times where a pack of yotes will come into the dogs running. I usually do my best to get in there quick as I can to get them on leads and head em out. I am from between lansing and flint and we killed seven yotes in deer season this year.

How do you know when they go into your pack and why arent they attacking you dogs when they do this. Congrats on the 7 you wacked!

Here in central Va the population is on the rise. According to one Game Warden we have coyotes in each county of the state. Saturday a friend was hunting in Charles City county when a yote ran in on his dog, grabbing it by the spine and shaking it like a rag doll. When it turned the dog loose he shot it in the face but did not kill it. He saw another one in the distance. It was very dark, almost black in color. The dog died before he could get it to the vet.

Merv, They will usually howl if in a pack. If you try real hard, you can usually smell them when they get close to you. I live in Ohio and they are getting worse here in the buckeye state. When I run at night is the only time I run into them. When the do come in,you got to be fast! Chad24

Yeah thats too bad! This is are worst nightmare. Its bad enough to lose a dog at all let alone to a varmint. I imagine a wolf would kill them instantly.

We've had a couple near atactks here in East TN. the dogs were running
and the next thing we saw was 4 yotes kinda circled around the dogs maybe 60 yards away.They were crouched down sneeking in form 4 different directions the dog had a long check and the yotes were getting closer maybe 30 yards now.We started yelling but didn't seem to effect what was happing we headed that way in a dead run 1 dog saw or smelled them and started bugger barking by then all the dogs saw them and tried to get to us but they were basically cut off.We were closing in fast and had grabed some rocks and started throwing and still yelling and the yotes
scatted fast.We were just running and it was sometime around mid March
or late March(rabbit season was over so we had no gun).We figured they had pups and were on a hunt for food for them.About the same thing happened a few weeks later but I had started carrying a little 22 2 shot darringure and still even durning gun season.

A friend of mine had his 15" bitch attack Sunday by a coyote. He lives in NY. He was close enough that he heard the Growling and put a shot in the air. She got bitten on the hind end , but will be all right. Every once in a while the coyotes here will come with in 15 - 20 feet of my kennel and check them out . By the time I get the gun and spot light working together they are gone.

My Dad has had 3 get their back legs chewed up, and 1 bit across the back. It seems to happen in the spring. Maybe when the Bitch coyotes have Pups.

Every beagler should take one day a week to hunt coyottes. The more killed the less to worry about. I was on my way to run dogs the other day and saw one walking across a plowed field. I pulled over and stuck the 22-250 out the window and shot it. We are going to hunt them all day Satuarday. The more you can get to hunt them the better your chances of getting one or two. We post shooters and the rest of us drive them by walking or riding 4 wheelers. I wish everyone would form coyotte hunting clubs and thin them down. We have found that anti-freeze meatballs work real well in the spring. But if you are going to run dogs in the same area you must be sure that they are either picked up or gone before turning dogs loose. We did that in a couple of areas last spring and have not seen one coyotte there this season.

I don't know if this will work, but I've had an idea that I'm gonna try this spring. Most coyotes start mating in February and by April 15 their pups are on the ground. During this time they get really territorial.
This spring I'm gonna carry my .45 acp and my coyote howler while running my dogs. If I see a coyote or just get the feeling they are around I'll find myself a good spot and give a few challenge howls and barks. This should get the Alpha pair's mind off my dogs and on to me. Hopefully they will get close enough to give them some lead for breakfast. It may or may not work, but it will be worth trying.

I read somewhere that is one thins them out there litter size increases.So if that's the truth I gyess it's only a quick fix.
In Ontario right now the anti's are trying get legislature passed to protect them.By limiting a hunter to two per year.Have to by tags just like you would for deer.How's that for lunacy.

Goodness, Canada is getting crazier and crazier. If they put a limit where I live, the good ol' boys would just throw out some poison meatballs.

Everything is just a quick fix with the coyote. You won't eradicate them, but they are a fairly intelligent animal. Once they learn to associate that a pack of beagles means a man with a firestick, they have a better tendency to leave the beagles alone and go attack something without so much aerial support.

yyotes are olot hunters are reporting dogs jumped and killed by yotes hunters keep in close when rabbit hunting

I know they are going into my dogs because they are growling and barking like a dog at them. I have actually seen them come across a picked field and run right into my pack of dogs. I have no idea why they didnt attack dogs. I wasn't trying to let it get to that point. As soon as I saw them I ran in there making a bunch of noise yelling and grabbed my dog off the line he was running.
