I had a young dog that was gun-shy. She had no reason to be. First time I shot around her while running was with a 22 rifle.I was not even very close to her. She immediately quit. She was looking to be an above avg dog and I really liked her. Tried a few times after to shoot at more distance with same results. Never had one gun shy before or since her. I had always believed that dogs became gun-shy because of poor training/shooting too close but this experience led me to believe there could be some genetic factor.
If I agreed with you then we'd both be wrong.

I once had a young bitch, Abbie, by FC Jim's Roscoe and out of Northwoods and Gay bitch. She was one of the most talented bitches that I have owned. She started early and could straddle a line and run with an awesome chop mouth. When she was about a year old my buddy, Dave and I took a trip to hunt on some of the Nursery land around Smithfield, TN. We hunted all day, killed several rabbits and Abbie did great. A few weeks later Dave and I, plus a couple of other friends, drove back to Smithfield to hunt again. After a few races and a few shots I noticed that Abbie was not in the pack. Then I heard her running solo. I went and got her and returned her to the pack. She ran fine until the next rabbit was shot. Then she again left the pack and jumped and ran her own rabbit. I retrieved her again and put her in the dog box. After that I tried running her with just me and my beagles. She never got over her dislike of gunfire.
I bred her once and the female pup that I kept had the same traits. She would hunt and run fine. But once a gun was fired she would leave and jump and run her own rabbit farther away.
These dogs were not shy at all, they just didn't like the sound of firearms.

A lot of gun shyness is genetic and it is a major fault in many breeds . It can be a man made problem but I think it has more to do with genetics . Some dogs you can get them to overcome this problem but it is not easy . In my opinion you should never breed a dog that has a major fault their are to many good dogs out their that can be breed to settle one one that might pass on these faults. Breed the best to the best.

The best male i ever owned was off of a gunshy bitch! This doesnt mean that the pups will be gunshy.
