Persistent Cough
Could use some thoughts. Real nice 3 1/2 year old male that has a persistent cough. Seems to cough sometimes to the point he has a gag reflex but never see anything come up. Dealt with it all last winter and spring and its here again this winter. Has been seen by 2 vets over it and neither could tell me much of anything. Lot of blood work done and test ran and money spent with them telling me he is in good shape. Seems not to show itself in the summer. Ran several courses of broad spectrum antis that did nothing. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Re: Persistent Cough
Have any of the vets done a xray on him? He may have ran a stick down his throat and had it break off except a piece still stuck and may only agitate to make him cough on certain times of the year. Just a thought.

Re: Persistent Cough
Is this a cough or a wheeze? have any of these been checked for heart worms, bronchitis, a collapsed trachea or congestive heart failure. I have a 13 year old female that has a chronic wheeze BUT she seems normal in all other aspects. She eats drinks empties out and has no other general signs of any other complications. This started back just before the cold weather and I thought it was kennel cough which I have ruled out due to how long she has had this wheeze and my other dogs not having any at all. She is on a concrete kennel in a plastic barrel dog house with out anything inside other than a piece of carpeting covering the entrance opening. She has been in this same situation for years and didn't start this wheeze until just this late fall. Nothing new and nothing changed other than her age and I have concluded that this has something to do with her age such as congestive heart failure or a collapsed trachea. She has been on Ivermec heart worm preventive her entire life and the same dog food about as long. Nothing different fro her other than age but these others here are much younger.
Re: Persistent Cough
I had a dog that developed the same condition at around 5yrs old. His tended to be more prevalent in the pen. My vet did an x-ray to rule out something stuck in the throat and he found a small tumor pressing against his trachea. He would cough and gag some when he first started to run but it would tend to go away. The dog lived to be 16 yrs old. The vet stated if it doesn't bother him while running keep running him.

Re: Persistent Cough
Have the vet's looked hard at the dogs heart and lungs? Just because he is young does not rule out a heart condition or lung problem just makes it less likely. His heartworm test came back negative right? Have the same thing going on here with the coughing but the dogs are old, vet said congestive heart failure could tell by listening with stethoscope put em on Lasix and it has helped a bunch.
