BELLS ON YOUR BEAGLE TO SCARE OFF OYTYS

Post by dhoundman »

WHY DO YOU ALL THINK THAT BELLS KEEP COYOTES AWAY FROM YOUR BEAGLES :?:

AND WHAT IS THE BEST PLACE TO GET BELLS FROM :?:

I HAVE HAD TWO ATTACKS ON MY BEAGLE ONE IN SEPT. ANOTHER JUST LAST WEEK (DEC.) BUT I DID NOT HAVE ANY BELLS ON THE BEAGLES I WAS RUNNING. (LUCKLY NO BEAGLES WHERE HURT) JUST SCARED THE PEE OUT OF THEM AND SO I LEFT. I DID HOWEVER HAVE A SHOT GUN SHELL TAPED AROUND THE COLLAR THAT I HAD JUST SHOT A COUPLE HOURS BEFORE. THAT WAS MY IDEA AND IT DID NOT WORK. SO I AM WILL TO TRY ANYTHING AT THIS PIONT BEFOR I LOSE A BEAGLE TO THOSE DEVIL DOGS. :vamp:

I WISH THEY NEVER WOULD HAVE REINTRODUCED THEM THAT WAS ANOTHER STUPID GAME WARDEN IDEA. :annoyed:

I use small turkey bells from Rural King. They last longer than the bells that I bought from other places. I can hear the bells at a range out to about 150-200 yards. Also, they are small enough where they don't injure the dogs legs. No bell that I have tried works in snow.

Personally I think bells are very effective. Never had an issue w/ coyotes when using them. They all freeze up though in snow. I bought jingle bells years ago w/ the intention of pop riveting them on collars & putting a small weight on the opposite side to keep them on top of the neck. I never did use them. I can't remember who told me to do it, it was long before the Internet, but said they worked well. You can get some real heavy duty jingle bells that are quite loud. I bet they'd be easy to find & on sale this time of year.

http://www.eisenhutdogsupplies.com/collars/bells.htm Is where I get mine. The only ones I've not had my dogs rip off while in the brush.

Going to look for some today. Miles dogs were hit this week and that made me realize the reality of it. Hunted with guy Saturday that had one mounted on top of collar. It rang all day and we were in 6" of snow. I can see other benefits to it as well.

Has anyone had dogs injured by coyote with the Bells on?

Those bells also always let the Yotes know where your hounds are at, at all times. Tie a big bell around your necks, talk to your hounds a lot more and get in the brush with them and get your scent around the area, works wonders. Jmo

I've never had a dog attacked but I knew a man from Texas named Lamar Denby and he had several problems with coyotes. I asked him this same question, he said he had used bells and no problems but he had also had dogs wearing bells killed by coyotes. He wasn't convinced it really had much impact either way.

Not sure one way or the other but I always have bells on at least half of the dogs I'm running. I have two kinds, one is the ones mentioned from TSC (remingtons) the others are a cowbell type that aren't to big but are heavier metal. I figured two different tones may help.

Never had a problem before I used them and haven't had one since...course I guess I could get one eaten tomorrow.
