Any Yoopers

Post by Richie57 »

Hey guys, fairly new here on the forum and just starting to get back into beagling. Wondering if there are any Yoopers or Northern WI folks here. I live in the W. Central part of the U.P. when back up home. I'm also in the process of looking for a pup or two. Would like as close to some of the old Northwoods breeding. Know a bit of a reach though. :D

Hi Paul,
I had a very brief talk with Steve a while back on line. Dropped him a line a couple days ago to see if he could help me out and wanted to know about the chance of Northwoods line. Know he is probably busy with work, family and holidays. You see that kennel name and part of that old line originally belonged to my uncle Jack Willson who was a good friend of Cliff Warren many, many years ago. When my uncle moved for work he must have left it to Cliff? Cliff did far more with it than my uncle. My uncle and grandfather started a club here in Central IL in the late 30's.They also assisted in getting Lake Superior Club off the ground with Cliff. My G-grandfather St. Clair Willson also was involved.
Though I do know that my uncle had Northwoods dogs here Central IL too and I remember Cliff coming down here and running his dogs in Central IL with my grandfather. Well long story... a lot more to it. Lots of good memories. Thanks Paul. Hope to meet you some time.

Rich
Heard bits and pieces of those times at the club. Plenty of pics out at the club, but to find someone that would still have that line up close. John Quigley may know. Steve will usually email back within a week.

Might be time to just get a pup out of dogs you like. Steve's got some very nice young ones.

Well I think your right. I'll probably have to get a pup or two out of some dogs I like. I'm just dreaming and reaching for something long gone.

Rich, I was looking through some of my dogs pedigrees which are Paycheck breed dogs and they do go back to the Northwoods breeding such as Flakers Rex, Sheba, Go-Go girl, Nubian Queen but they are back about 7 generations. That may be a place you want to start.

Knew a guy that had some of the Northwoods blood and some real good dogs. Just heard he sold all of his dogs though. His kennel is or was First's Waiska River Beagles.
I believe his address is Brevort, Mi. Just West of St. Ignace. Last phone I had for him is 906-292-5577. His name is Larry First.

Thanks fellas definitely helps! Was just looking at Brant Creek Beagles pedigrees out of Northern WI and found some Northwoods Spotty Sam and Northwoods Melody Queen , some Paycheck and Dingus. Pretty nice looking pedigree overall. The Brant Creek dog is out of Brankos Cougar Magnum and Blueberry Knoll Tessa. Steve Laux has Blue Berry Knoll so will probably talk to him. Plus he is not to far from me when I am back up home. Like what I see here! Been a while. Kind of exciting for me to research all this stuff again and you guys giving me more to take a gander at. Very kind of you! :D

Rich, I love nostalgia too, but truthfully anything w/ north woods on the prefix is going to be a good 6 generations back. Also, Cliff Warren, although a very knowledgeable houndsman, really wasn't a legendary breeder. I believe Cliff told me he had over sixty field champions. I doubt if he bred even a handful of them. Even his most famous hound, FC Northwood's Spotty Sam was a product of 2 hounds Cliff had purchased & bred, that being FC Lakeside Snowflake x IFC Robanit's Spotty Jan. I guess what I'm saying is Northwood's was more of a prefix than a line. Not to take anything away from Cliff, if a dog stayed in his kennel chances are it was a good one. That being said, all of my hounds have a good shot of Northwood's in their pedigrees via Paycheck & Bj's Shoot The Moon. Mark Maccani in Bessemer has some excellent dogs that go back to Northwood's, as does Terry Hannu of Ironwood. Jim Meachum of ishpeming probably has the most close up Northwood's of anyone and some great dogs. Good luck, half the fun is researching the different dogs.

Steve thanks for the reply and the tips. Nostalgia is a good way to put it and should not predicate everything I am looking for on this (Northwoods) which I'm not. It would be nice but definitely not a prerequisite in what I want or need. I'd definitely prefer to run 13" if I could find them too. Yes, doing the research has been fun. Looking forward to meeting you and others when I get back up home this coming year and get out to the club.
