A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)

Why give up beagles Newt, when all that is necessary to elevate you up the ladder is a little help. I know a couple of "Houndsmen" in Tennessee ( I think that is where you are at) that I believe would help you. I think it is right to ask you first, If they were agreeable to take you " under their wing" for a bit would you be up for it! perhaps you all live close enough to one another to make this happen, what town do you live in? I think that one should offer help and solutions, you could learn a lot from them, I have read your back posts and though you could use a good bit of help you have a some of the basic knowledge, my offer of help, what do you say? And as far as raising Chihuahua's Newt, do you think that would would start out at the expert level there? probably not, you would probably be in worse shape with them than you are with beagles, as you do have some basic knowledge with beagles, but perhaps you have some prior knowledge of Chihuahuas, I don't know! Just saying' stay with what you have been doing, and if you never progress beyond the basics, big deal, the Sun will still rise in the morning! Let me know if you have the time or the inclination to step up, I will talk to them on your behalf.
Biggest load of Horse Sh$$ I've ever seen. Are you really that impressed with yourself ? Hope your hounds aren't as mouthy.
Very interesting thread here I have to agree with the vet and sr patch . The biggest part of this I have a problem with is that some people think that the hare or rabbit controls this shutting off scent. I think it happens but it is a invloantaty action of being scared and it throughout off the hounds for a short time .
pilotknob, If that is the biggest load you have ever seen you haven't been reading your own posts, they give you away , right away! of course I am sure you don't realize how uninformed about hound matters that you really are, or are you ? This " calling" out of me may actually be an attempt by yourself to get some help as well, I see it often, and it has led to me mentoring guys like you before, I will do what I can. I am not impressed with myself, there are many who know more as a matter of fact I said so in the post of mine you quoted, it is just that there are those like yourself who know so little ( I researched your posts,) that even someone with my limited knowledge is miles ahead of them. You may think otherwise but I am not trying to be unkind to you just telling you what is apparent to those with even a little knowledge beyond the basics! and it was you that brought yourself to my attention, keep that in mind. I see that as a plea for help. Well, I will do the best I can , but I am not Santa Claus who is capable of giving unlimited gifts! I genuinely would like to help all of the guys like you to gain some much needed knowledge,( I am only aware of about four of you that are standing on the FIRST rung, and by the way Newt, is not one of you, he is a little further up the ladder) once again my offer of help is genuine, call it the Christmas spirit of giving. Hopefully it will spur you on to gain the experience necessary for you to actually contribute something in conversations in the company of houndsmen. And I hope that someday I can look at you and say there is a houndsman, It is a long way off that is for sure, but I feel that you can do it, work hard at it, don't be swayed by wive's tales, and think, Think, think, this can not be over- done. Please respond, let's get together on some form of a program for you, I don't have unlimited time but I will help you with what I know must be many questions that you have, perhaps an e-mail correspondence where I can answer your questions at my leisure, and then maybe a little quiz for you at the end of every week to monitor your progress ! Merry Christmas!

I know that females dont have much scent in spring or summer. Ive heard this said before and think its a bunch of hookie. If i had to make an excuse like that i would get differant dogs. Im no beginner, been around beagles my whole life.
There was a bunch of men running in the pens yesterday with there tcp dogs. There dogs came to a check. One of them said. What did that rabbit do their?I said he shut his scent off. They said. That was a new one on them. One said, People will come up with any thing to cover there dogs?I believe the next time I do a two couple trial and a guy gets on a rabbit and just cannot keep the rabbit going and the next guy comes in and runs the crap out of the same rabbit.I am going to tell the first man.Sorry don t put it on the dogs. That rabbit used his shut off switch the hold time on your dogs.So all you non houndsman out their. When your dogs come to a lost on the rabbit.Remember.The SHUT OFF SWITCH.
Funny, not one offer for a hound that never loses contact with scent....... imagine that, guys admitting there dogs failing without actually admitting it.....ran mine two nights ago, we had checks....... they struggled at times......do I have mediocre dogs, YES, it must be the case.........sometimes they even lose a rabbit.....wow......still ALWAYS looking for the ones these guys on here describe, one that runs the doe rabbit to a flaming abortion or in a shot situation runs the rabbit thru a wall of smoke and retrieves my spent shells so as to keep the earth clean........then drives it on thru with authority.......
Not saying they have an off switch, but if you havent seen dogs fail you havent watched very attentively.... or maybe you are just fooling yourself, not accusing folks just ??????????????

I think we all agree sometimes our dogs can not smell. I'm just saying prove the scent off thing to me with out saying "I think" or "in my opinion " you guys can all guess or say You are the great old mighty houndsman but until you prove it I still say "NO!"
I will admit their has been a few really good educated guesses. Can somebody post a link to a web site or a study from some where? An yes I'm still laughing out loud because now their is more votes for the off switch.

No one has said that their dogs never fail. I just pointed out a couple that I had owned that had superior concentration/nose that the majority don't have. I can get witnesses if you like. I had an old bitch "Break O Day's Trudy" by Kalagha out of an Applachian Mountain Jay. I sold her to a guy who is trying to improve his kennel. We had a fun run a couple years ago. There were a couple of bitches there that day that had licensed places and one has now finished. Trudy dominated that pack. Not just my opinion the viewers watching the video were unanimous. One guy who owns a kennel full of Gay Bred dogs made this statement. "We rabbit hunted with Trudy last Christmas, If we hadn't had Trudy we would not have had a run.' I wasn't there, I didn't ask, I didn't see the hunt. He saw the video of the fun run and made the statement. Ask Tn Hoss. I've never met him, but that is what he posted.
We are all on the board to discuss beagles not to beat up on someone who has a different opinion or has had different experiences. Personally I don't care who thinks I know anything beagles. Losers who need gratification by belittling others are a dime dozen. Its all about the hounds. I've made plenty of mistakes but I'm quite content with the hounds that I feed and I wouldn't take someone else's if they were free. Done that and they were not a bargain!!!!

chris axtell, I see your plea ! Shoot me a P.M. I will give you my contact info and get started on your training! Once again, I have researched your prior posts to see just where you are at, which rung you are standing on so to say. We should start right away, I think great progress could be made immediately with you. pilotknob , My offer of help was genuine and I can't force knowledge on you. I will be willing to help you at some point in the future as I am now, Once again Merry Christmas to the both of you and your families!

looks like people is starting to see this clown (GW), for what he really is. to answer your question pilotnob, he really is impressed with himself that much. why? i have no idea. he (thinks) everyone see him as a master houndsman, when everyone i talk to thinks he knows nothing much. i personally see him very young, with little friends to hunt with. ive been dealing with him since oct. will he respond to my post? you bet he will, telling evryone how young, or little knowledge, someone has when he knows NOTHING about me other than what he MAKES up. then he will go on to say, how great he is and how full of knowledge he is, offering help like i really want it. he ALWAYS does. the only thing that suprizes me is that, he hasn't told you guys about his hound knowledge in his book thats coming out. i bet before its over he will. I personally think its going to be a comedy, that is if there really is a book. so go on GW and write what u want as i will pay no attention to anything u say, because i already know your extremely full of it. NOW, as far as scent shutting off. i think its involuntary, as some have said. i wouldnt think they can whenever they want. just when suddenly scared.
