grandfather cross need advise

Post by sammiller03 »

i have a female that i really like and am hoping to breed her in the spring. i have two males picked out . one is her grandfather that has everything i really like and the other male is a partial outcross that is about the same style as the grandfather but has only had one litter of pups. wanting input on what you guys would do . i know the grandfather throws in his pups what i feel my female is lacking and he is getting up in age but the grandfather throws small dogs.possibly 12 inch. my female is around 14 i like dogs in that size range but the other male is a full 15 inch dog and it would be nice to have that size. this female is not line bred ,i hate to brake it down this way but its the only way i know how to have it make sense. the female i have is

......................branko
.................branko
......................branko
female
......................buckshot mr bill
.................mom
......................patch

the grandfather i would be breeding to has the buckshot mr bill blood. the other male is about half branko blood. this cross is not to make money its for my own personal stock and i figure this will be the last year that the grandfather will be able to reproduce

im just confused and would like some input on tight crosses
thanks sam

Go to the grandfather This litter then go to your other younger dog next
if you get anything from the first cross

Why go to the store to get your spring water when you can go straight to the well??? Go with the sure bet first (old Dog) then out cross!!

Try the old one first if you don't get what you want u can always try the younger later.

I think it depends on how much of a priority you put on size. I don't keep little males, no matter how well they run. If size is really important, I wouldn't breed to a male that consistently throws little males. He might be the best cross for dogs overall, but if it isn't what you want, then it wouldn't be the best cross for you.

Sammiller03, I can't tell you whether it would be a good breeding or not as I know nothing about the hounds. But,( and I think this may be your only concern) If you are worried about the mating being too close , it is not. Good Luck!

I am just curious what the raw chicken is going to do to help the dog grow I have always believed that you could stunt a dog's growth if It wasnt fed right but you could never make it grow any bigger by what you fed it. Size is in the genes

you hit the nail on the head concerned of to close and the only other factor is that i know i will get small dogs from this cross. it dosnt really bother me becouse i think they will have good foot to them just never owned a dog that small. the grand father has very few faults in my eyes has excellent hunt, nose ,speed ,linecontrol and throws good pups. but again the will be small. might just keep the whole litter for awhile and see how they grow

thanks

SAM, As others have said proper nutrition will allow them to reach their full potential ,I believe there are a lot of 13" hounds out there that with different nutrition while they were in their growing stage would have made them well over 13" . And as some others have said their genes dictate this potential.
