A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
I don't care how precious a buck of a lifetime is, its time you deer hunters that think y'all own the right to have first dibs on the woods be put in your place!!!
Bodetis for someone that supposedly runs dogs to say you would think about shooting a dog you need to rethink if you are truly a beagler or just someone who has dogs!!! That kid would have walked out of the woods with the butt of the gun sticking out his bottom side!!! There is no deer nor is there a hunt out there worth shooting a dog!!!!! I hope this man takes that family to the cleaners!!!

.........................................................................................dude im just speaking from seeing it from both sides. take your beagle goggles off and look at the whole picture. i dont limit myself to only rabbit hunting , so that makes me and my dogs less than say someone like you who thinks that they are a true beagler. im an outdoors man i have rabbit dogs, i have a bow, i bow hunt, i have a gun, i gun hunt, hell i even have a fishing pole and love to bass fish in the spring, that is when im not turkey hunting. i love to do it all and i take it all seriously. i myself have never shot a dog but have had dogs blow my hunts more than once and yes i got pissed. some just let their dogs run wild all the time and there is no place for that either.im dont condone what the kid did, and he should never have been alone. but there are people that wont hesitate to shoot a dog in a heartbeat. you can cut trees down, burn trees down, pee all around the tree, and hell do what ever else. people will shoot dogs and not lose any sleep over it i will NEVER hunt my hounds during gun season, but if i did and you know hunters are around your really just asking for it period

I would never burn an innocent tree, I was talking about torching their truck. Let 'em walk their sorry butt back home.
I have been running my dogs at night since Oct. 1 the start of our bow season here . We just finished two weeks of gun season and have a muzzle loader Dec. 6 thru 22 to get thru and an antlerless only Dec.22 thru Jan 1. Where do you draw a line Bodetis? You claim a few days won't kill anybody and it won't but is a bow hunter any different then a gun or muzzle loader? I'm done dodging guys like you. I don't want to mess up anybody's hunt but it happens and try as I may to avoid deer hunter's sooner or later we will cross path's. When people get so pissed off about it it shows the selfishness of there human nature and the all about me attitude of life.We have had several deer hunter's prosecuted here for shooting dogs "messing up their hunts", some with arrows others with guns.I am glad when these knuckleheads get caught and hope they never see the woods again cause I really don't think of them as sportsman.
I live in western ky, and we have numerous deer hunters in the woods through out deer season, especially during rifle season. The worst thing KDFW done was change our upland game season to were it comes in during rifle season. Back to the main topic a 13 year old shot a mans dog while deer hunting. I don't know what state or where it doesn't matter. A true sportsman/ outdoorsman are going to run into situations like this, a dog coming into a deer set up. Was it private land or public? Did the boy now of anybody else who hunted property? id he kill the last dog in a long line of hounds the man had? Was the dog a highly respected member of the guys pack or just a trash running piece of junk? It doesn't matter cause it was not the boys own hound. If it was, so be it, but it wasn't. To me the boy being 13 soaks in a lot of what he hears from others. Example, ( I tell ya if I see a darn beagle come under me in my stand he wont be leaving). We need to be careful what we teach our youngens about the outdoors. Number one thing is respect. To me if the dog was messing his hunt up, he should've climbed down went and confront the rabbit hunters. Was it private or public we do not know. If it is public, granted it would be more difficult situation, but who knows rabbit hunters might be so impressed they would honor the 13 year old for being mature about the situation.
We will always have these kind of run ins being outdoorsman. I run my dogs year around. I am a avid deer and turkey hunter. I try to be aware of my locations were I run if a season might be in. Should the boy just blasted the hound, NO. He took something away that cannot be replaced to that hunter. If he had time to shoot the dog, go ahead and beat it to death, and take the collar off, he been better off just letting it run through, he probally ruined his hunt more by doing all that. Guys lets slow down and teach our kids what the outdoors means to not just us but others as well.

I stop running by oct 1 start running Jan 1 .
If I stopped running oct 1 and started Jan. 1 I would miss all of rabbit season and what would be the point of having beagles!!! These deer hunters dont run these woods nor do the own them!! Stand up for yourselves and don't back down just cause some jack wagon thinks he is king Kong cause he is after a BUCK OF A LIFETIME!! Guess what, I'm after the DOG OF A LIFETIME, and they ain't gonna be that if they sitting in the kennel waiting on some precious little deer hunter to pass up a bunch of deer just waiting for the SPECIAL ONE!!!!

.....................................................................................................................................................whats selfish is the guys like you that keep saying deer hunter think they own the woods hell us with beagles have to run our hounds year around think about it. our first muzzle comes in before season then ten days of gun in nov. i dont worry about our bow season or the late muzzle in dec. you wont have that many hunters in the woods. during gun you will have the weekend warriors and people from others states walking all over each other.thats why i stay out of the woods. i love to rabbit hunt and think the world of my dogs, but im not gona get pissed at gun hunters like some of you do and say they think they own the woods and blah blah blah. they pay their money for tags , gear , shells etc and have every right to be out there also. and some only have a few days to like i said kill that buck of a lifetime .now back to the issue, the kid i agree has probally heard that before im sure. he should have never been along with a gun.im not condoning what he did, im only saying it does happen so why take that chance. some think if they dont run 5 days a week every week all year somehow their dog s are gona be behind especially if you trial, its selfish on you alls part when we have the woods pretty much all year long . i dont make the seasons or dates i only abide by them. sorun your dogs during gun seasonif you want, its a chance im not taking

...........................................................................................................you should try it sometime, you might like it smh
my hunting license give me the right to run my beagles 365 days a year . if anybody shoots one of my dogs, they might as well go ahead and call a hurst cause one of us is going to need it.
if you shoot my dog ,ill shoot you. plain and simple.
Dogs running rabbits have changed things for the better as many times as changing them for the worse for deer hunters. As a long time Deer hunter ( I have hunted Deer as long as I have hunted rabbits) I understand the woods must be shared, not selfish here. Why would one ever get the idea that their Deer hunt is more important than another man's rabbit hunt ( Selfish) But anyhow, I have rabbit hunted during Deer Gun season all of my life, no problems . The 2nd week of gun season is in now and I am waiting for my buddy to get here. we are hunting today. Am I taking a chance, If I would be so unfortunate as to encounter Bodetis yea things could go sour, for all involved. Fortunately there aren't many Bodetis' around anymore, no one needs them at anytime whether hunting or not. There is another on here that would shoot a dog just as Bodetis would and we have had this discussion with him. I noticed Bodetis has started to tone it down a little but make no mistake about it, read his posts he would shoot your dog if he saw it in the " Deer woods" . In my opinion he is really not worth having a discussion with and if those of us who would not shoot another man's dog would refuse to reply to him on any topic, he would have to go away or simply talk to himself. That is how I am going to deal with him and dog from here on out you should try it as well. I know it is hard not to respond to their asinine comments ( Some are going to be directed at me very shortly) but it would be the best way to deal with those type of whatever you want to label them as!
bodetis wrote:no way i would be hunting or running during rifle season. i deer and rabbit hunt and i have a lot of money and time into my deer huunting also, so i know if any dog stray or rabbit messes up my hunt, not sayen i would but i would probaly want to shoot one myself. just not smart . but also agree a 13 year old should not be turned on his own with a high powered rifle!!!! most places you get 3 months of rabbit hunting , why chance it
sir if you or anyone else shot my dog over a deer , there would be serious reaction to your action // just a note . a friend of mine some years back had his dog shot by a mad neighbor ,the neighbor had to pay the price he wanted for the dog ..and future litters he could have produced i forget how much he got but it was a bushell load .. i would go after the same thing ,..
yes john i have took martial arts most of my life tae kwon doe was my specialty ,but have studied submissions alot as well .. not to shabby for an old man i can still kick above my head .i have dont it for exercise mostly but it did come in handy twice in my life ..1 neck crank and 1 side kick in 2 different situations stopped what coulda been a free for all ..they just want to fight no more when they cant breathe or they cant breathe for the pain lol.
....................................................................................... mr preacher i my self own dogs and i would be upset if one of mine got shot, some who have done nothen but run and hunt beagles their whole life and have never hunted anything else , will feel the same way you do. as some who do deer hunt that would feel the way you do. and thats fine but the reality of it is that alot of hunters are looking for that buck of a lifetime and wont tolerate dogs messing that up. there are wild dogs out there that need to be shot just like coyotes. most probally on here wont admit to it but im sure the ones that deer hunt also have at one time or another came close or thought that if a dog ever did come in they would shoot it. its just part of it. i myself would never put me or my dogs in that situation period. jmo
DEAR SIR i have done it all and still do some dont pressume because i love my dogs i donyt do anything else . i turkey hunt ,fish , and deer hunt every now and again.. i buy my sportsman license every year so i can do what notion hits me .i have all the equipment to do it all. i would never shoot a dog over a deer hunt when the dog or the hunter has the same right as me to be there..it was public land a wma . deer hunters are not made of gold no matter even if the game warden thinks they are.

The conservation dept. needs to look at this problem in all states. Seems like deer season consumes most of the hunting season. It`s all about money now days, and deer hunting is big money from start to finish. Tons of money is spent from the time you are getting ready to go until you hang that big head on the wall. We need to petition our conservation dept to regulate it better. It does not need to last all winter. If you can`t kill a deer in 3 or 4 weeks you need to stay home. After that amount of time the deer are going to be stired up so much to find anyway. I hunt for meat and it does not take all winter to kill a deer. If they extended rabbit season another 3 weeks in Missouri i would be happy. This post is directed at dept. of conservation only and not at hunters of all kinds. David Hayden just my opinion
Thing with deer hunting vs's rabbit hunting is we spend a lot more time, and money then they do. Once they have their hunting gear they don't really need any new gear. We always have to buy food, pay the water bill that raises due to having dogs, meds, and so forth. Time spent raising pups, and finishing a dog out. They don't own the woods. Nor does anyone for that matter. Yet they need to respectful as we are. I try to avoid area's I know a deer hunter might be. Sometimes you can't. I had a friend lose a dog to a bow hunter a couple years ago. I would have dragged him out of the woods, and called the law on him. That's me though. Someone kills a dog they don't realize how much money is lost in it.

I'm also a deer hunter I run all year long in the law . Most people don't have morals after Jan 1 I still have 90 days to hunt.
