casey, So one should have have extreme confidence in a gun and load that after firing more than 200 pellets at a animal one managed to luck ONE into the heart, the other didn't have the energy left to even penetrate. I cannot see where this would breed extreme confidence in a mind, it should say the opposite. Kill one rabbit at 45 yards after two shots with only two pellets hitting the target out of several hundred and only one having the energy to penetrate and this builds extreme confidence in someone.. I hope some don't luckily place a pellet in a rabbits head at 65 yards and it gives them extreme confidence of having a 65 yard gun. I really can't think of anyone I know that would say after firing more than 200 projectiles at a target and only placing one on target that he has confidence in the load. But hey, go at it. Not trying to start anything just trying to get you to think about it. 200 projectiles and only one hit, think about it, and shoot at them as you wish. And yes, I wouldn't ask him to come closer either, I would simply let the dogs put another lap on him, that's what most I know do.

I took the shot was confident with it. I don't shoot unless I know I can make a kill. He did go down. Would I take that shot again, yes, Why because I've shot them before at that distance and have shot them before while running.

Funny thing is that I could never hit anything standing still. I missed a buck one year when I was younger. He could of scored 140. The very next year I shot a doe on the run at fifty yards with a 12 gauge. It's awful funny it seems I hit moving targets.

My dad, fiancé, and brother go to the American legion every Sunday to shoot .22 bird shots at targets. I don't go cause I can't hit many targets standing still.

I can remember every missed shot at a game animal I've ever taken, (except for doves, those little darting shits ) I don't miss because I'm an excellent shot, but because I know what I'm shooting, range, situation, etc. I have let squirrels go because they were a lil far, but as far as crippling and not recovering, NO. I could pack my.223 with me and reach out and shoot all kinds at 100-250 yards. Guess it's just like the old saying, "to each his own"

Casey, i had to laugh when i read this, ...... i get a charge outta those guys hunting food plots on TV, get lots of footage and then when the deer turns sideways and lifts its front leg and poses they blow the heart out of it. To me thats not hunting, i will bring those guys to PA and let them make BAH sounds out of their mouths when were putting on a deer drive and they wont ever shoot. Knocked many a deer flat running and loping thru the woods off a deer drive.

GW-- I agree with what you are saying about #6's being better than 7.5's but one advantage is that Walmart carries the 7.5s and so does every single sporting goods store.

For some stupid reason they don't all caryy #6's except in steel shot. So one advantage is that they are about 50 cents cheaper and you can find them everywhere.

I like the high brass #6's when we huntin the big running swampers. They seem to at the very least break a leg. If you dont break them down right where you shoot them they will run in a hollow tree and more times than not, you will lose the rabbit. When running streakers, if I have some low brass 6 shot I will use them. I try to stay with the 6 shot but if I run into an old box of 7 and 1/2's I will shoot them if I dont have nothing else. All I ever rabbit hunted with was a 20 gauge. I tried a 410 pump with a full choke several decades ago and couldnt hit the side of a barn with it. Once I missed on several in a row, I went back to the old A5 light twenty and we still together.

I like 4,5 or 6 shot for small game and pheasants no matter the gauge and 7 1/2 for doves, grouse and back in the day for quail when we had some

Seen A guy yesterday using a 12ga winchester super X 2 shooting 3.5 T shot and had his limit I asked why so heavy of a load. He said its so thick its hard to get through the brush and when the rabbit hits the open he can kill um at 65 yards all day long and a good magnet will pull the shot right out. I dont know but he did have a pouch full of rabbits.

Mo Beagler 5000, I was really wanting to know if anyone could come up with a single advantage in the FIELD. I don't think anyone can.. I believe you understand why 7-1/2's are a illogical choice in every aspect compared to the larger shot sizes, such as #6 and #5, that is why you drove sixty miles to get them and I feel the same way as you do If I have to drive 100 miles to arm myself with a good choice of ammo before entering the field I will. You have actually given the matter some thought and have come to the conclusion that 7-1/2's are a poor choice .Seeing as how no-one can come up with one advantage over #6 or #5 you would think most would shy away from this poor choice of shot. Actually what should make some re-think their choice is the FACT that 7-1/2's are INFERIOR in every respect to the larger shot sizes on game such as rabbits, now the tables do turn when one is shooting woodcock, rails, doves and the like , but this small birdshot is a poor choice for rabbits, but it will kill rabbits at modest ranges and if you like eating lead I say use them!

Personally my preference tends to run towards red shells. Now I will tell you that I have had good results in recent years with yellow shells. Now I don’t claim to be an expert but if I had to guess I would speculate that Casey made that long shot with a green shell because they seem to hammer hard at longer ranges. JMO
