Re: Have you done this before???
I would never pass judgement on ANY dog that I saw run only one time. And just for the record we did run and jump some rabbits!!
I took a 10 week old pup from Sam x a I.F.C. Beavercreek Blue Max female [ Jake's Jackie Blue ] I put her in the dog box with the grown dogs and off to the running grounds.I figured the pup would just walk along with me.I put her down on the ground and she went right with the big dogs and never looked back!
For the next hour she tried to go everywhere they went. When they jumped a rabbit she was left far behind and I had to hike in and get her.She was getting in deep and I was afraid I'd lose her. After an hour of that she was gassed and crawled under my camp stool and went sound asleep.
Took her out yesterday at 11 weeks old.Same thing. She just hits the woods with them and does her best to stay with them and has her nose on the ground and gives every indication of hunting.
Don't get the wrong idea.I'm not trying to start an11 week old pup with grown hard hitting dogs.I was just figuring that I'd bring her along to get used to being hauled and get used to the great outdoors.I was very pleasantly surprised to see such a young pup showing such bold, adventurous and natural actions.
Jonah told me I could expect that from a Sam pup as he's seen those traits in alot of different pups out of him.
For the next several months she'll get lots of solo time. Then at 6 months she'll go with my older female. Then it's time to start getting it with my pack.
Sam may not have hunted that night like he usually does but he sure is putting the hunt in his pups!!!!

Re: Have you done this before???
The comments are appreciated guys and like always I truly hope everyone that leaves here with a pup or female bred gets exactly what they are looking for. I didn't mean to provoke comments on Sam nor his running I just meant to make a point that; usually when someone is going out to look at a dog you can bet the dog will look its worst (Newton's Law). I know that Dana is a houndsman and anyone that talks to him for a very short time will know it as well and a houndsman can always read between the lines and see a dog for what it is, it's the curse of the trade. lol
I have always told everyone that comes here I hope it is a bad day (meaning poor conditions), because that is when you see a dogs faults, I mean lets face it, what dog can't run a rabbit on a good heads up day, it's the bad days they show their true colors. I would rather my dogs be judged on their worse days, that's when you see their qualities and true breeding characteristics. So like Dana said if you see it the first time and it just doesn't stack up give it the benefit of the doubt and take another look, you might get surprised.

Reminds me of "every dog has it's day" hard to judge any dog on one outing. I know my dogs have off days. I don't need a perfect dog and have yet to have one. I just enjoy running hounds always have.

They are dogs, not machines. They fail, still looking for the perfect one...... never ending journey, but I enjoy the ride.

Yea but the problem is when all these owners say there dog is the most consistent dog they have ever seen an they never do this that or the other but you go so them in person and they are ass opposite then described and most of the time you have just as good if not better in your own back yard

Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Peyton Manning, Brett Farve, Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens all where most consistent athletes where they not?? These dogs are athletes are they not? I bet every person I just listed had a bad day when competeting so why can a owner not say dog is most consistent and be allowed to have a bad day???
Re: Have you done this before???
Maybe you are looking at the wrong dogs?
Been there and done that.

How are we to know if the day we saw him was his only bad day or the day a judge saw him was his only good day? We know owners/handlers pick their judges and pick their conditions if possible.

Re: Have you done this before???
No offense to other formats but I would say it takes a darn good dog to make a AKC FC, 3 wins and 120 points with 1 point per starting dog in the trial!! I would say the dog earned it and didn't just have 1-3 good days!! Just my opinion but I don't have a FC so I don't know much

At least you know that.
